My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cain is a 6 1/2 year old 14 pound chihuahua that thrives of attention. He's such a happy little guy especially when he's around children. He has never let the fact he's paralyzed from the waist down affect his demeanor or block his little ray of sunshine! He's also dog & cat  friendly and loves people!

Cain's favorite thing to do is burrow under a blanket as close to your body as he can but he doesnt mind sleeping in his own bed or play pen at night. In the mornings he is ready for some good neck scratches and attention from each child in his Foster Home.

Food is the way to Cain's heart. He loves strawberries, apples, and egg with his medicine which he takes twice a day. He never appears to be in any pain and is so full of life and has so much love to give.

He loves stroller rides, car rides and even days where he can just lay around with his favorite friend. Cain is learning to use the wheelchair but not yet a fan.  He prefers the lifting harness to be carried.

If you open the door to go outside, he will come flying down the hallway because he LOVES being outside!!!! The best part is how excited he gets, about food and people he loves. He does the "Cain Dance" where his ears go back, he smiles big while hopping around and spinning until you get on the floor and love on him.

To meet Cain in person visit us at www.DSDA.org/adopt and submit our online application.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting one of our amazing dogs:

1. Please fill out an adoption application. We will be in touch shortly after receiving your application to review it with you.

2. If the application is approved, the adoption team will work with you and the foster to schedule a meeting. You are also welcome to attend our adoption events to meet our dogs, however, it is encouraged to email us first to ensure a particular dog will be attending the event.

3. After meeting the dog, if all parties agree the process should continue, a home visit wil be scheduled and you will be asked to have a list of supplies ready for your dog to come home.

4. If the home visit is successful, the adoption contract is signed, the adoption donation is collected, and your dog stays with you that day. During the 10-day trial period, you and your dog will decide if it is the absolute perfect fit. If it's not, you will work with the adoption coordinator to return the dog.

Adoption Fee - The adoption fee helps cover your dog's basic health needs including spay/neuter and vaccinations. Because many of our dogs come straight from the street, their medical needs are extensive. We spend an average of $500 on each pet for medical needs, training, and rehabilitation. For this reason, we kindly ask for the following minimum donations: $300 for puppies 12 months and under & $250 for adult dogs.
