Carina is a 1 y/o who was surrendered by a vet. The breeder sold her at 8 months old to a family with young kids and a baby on the way, and a giant breed female dog in the home. A couple months later, the family surrendered Carina to a vet with the intention of having her euthanized after she started growling at the kids and other family members. The vet reached out to a local rescuer, who then notified us. We agreed to take Carina from the vet, who provided us with her medical record.
The vet notes state that when the owners brought Carina in for the first time, she “had a cherry eye that the breeder ‘did herself’” and that the eye looked like “hamburger meat” upon picking her up. The breeder told them that the cherry eye was “fixed by clipping” and “done at a vet clinic,” but when the owners’ vet called the breeder’s vet listed on the Rabies Cert, there was no record that the breeder’s vet had ever done a cherry eye surgery--only a rabies shot (no other shots or preventatives).
The owners also hired a “highly qualified trainer” to work with Carina, but Carina continued to have behavioral issues. The owners were asked if they had contacted the breeder for help, and they stated that contacting the breeder was not an option due to the conditions the dogs were kept in. They said the dogs were living on gravel and regularly left unsupervised for days. Evidently, they felt euthanasia was a more humane option than returning her to the breeder. Carina is in a boarding facility in Illinois staffed with behaviorists due to her alleged behavior, but her problems seem to have been due to being placed in the wrong home, and perhaps not being socialized while she was with the breeder. Carina has typical Neo behaviors and will need an experienced owner to continue her training.
