Don’t let that cute face fool you! Mateo is a little hellion puppy who never had a bit of training and was so scared at the shelter no one could handle him except one employee. They asked if we could help so he wouldn’t be euthanized, and we stepped right up. Mateo will need an experienced dog owner who can continue his training, structure and rules. He will do best with a female dog or no dogs. (he lives with both but gets mad when the other male gets attention.) He loves the cats and kittens in his foster home and plays with them. Mateo is crate and leash trained but is barrier reactive in the crate. His foster mom has been working with that and our awesome trainer gave her tips when he evaluated Mateo; he thinks the pup had bad experiences in the crate. Mateo is afraid of his crate door getting closed. He will go in the crate on his own; however, he barks and bites at the door as it’s being closed. Once closed, he is calm and quiet. Mateo has been observed by our trainer and he is becoming less and less afraid of the door as a result of positive training techniques. He will sleep through the night in his crate or in his foster mom’s bed. Mateo had to be sedated at the vet. The shelter said he was fearful of loud noises and barked and growled when something scared him. For this reason, we are recommending no small children in his forever home. We believe Mateo is around 10 months old. He weighs 20 pounds and is still growing. He has a beautiful soft, creamy fawn colored coat. Mateo will need to be groomed every 2 to 3 months and combed or brushed weekly. He is high energy and has a short attention span. He loves sitting on your lap, belly rubs, chew toys, car rides, and long walks. He is very good on a leash. Mateo is house trained. He loves to play. Mateo is a barker, so may not be appropriate for apartment/condo living. He is also very rambunctious and needs daily exercise and /or a fenced yard. He has learned to use the doggie door in his foster home and comes and goes as he pleases. He has no problem entertaining himself. Mateo is located in the Myrtle Beach, SC area He is neutered, up to date on vaccines and preventatives and microchipped. Approved application, home visit, and adoption donation of $225 required. *Adopter will be required to agree to a trainer if needed.
