If you are interested in Samson you must drive to meet him
Well hold onto your heart, because this guy will steal it right away from you if you're not careful! This fella was found as a stray on a good samaritan's property. He was bleeding from the mouth and had a gash on his nose. The property owners have horses, and our best guess is that he was kicked by one of them. He was taken to an emergency vet clinic, where they discovered he had a fractured jaw. They wired his jaw, kept him comfortable with morphine and transferred him to TLAC.
We took Samson into rescue on Sunday and then to the vet first thing Monday. The good news is that his jaw had been stabilized so well with the metal sutures that he does not require surgery. We will let the jaw heal on its own, and he is making great progress every day. He is eating well, and can shake his head and yawn better every day.
If only we knew what Samson's story was - he is a bit of a mystery. He shows very clear signs of being someone's pet: he will sit the instant he sees a bowl of food, and he can even shake hands. He comes right away when you call his name, and does well on a leash as well. He goes right into a crate and sleeps comfortably in there. He is left free in the utility room throughout the day and has not gone potty in there even once. We'll know more about how well potty trained he is soon.
He was so good with the TLAC staff, and also when he got his initial exam with our vet. He even handled his heartworm test (he is hw negative, btw) like a champ. Even given his injury and the pain he is in, he has been very sweet and affectionate with everyone.
And if you really want your heart to melt, just wait til he gives you one of his "hugs." He gets up on his hind legs and then surprisingly gently puts his front paws on your waist. ACK! Too much cuteness! He will "hug" you and look at you with his sweet smooshy face til you have had enough, and not a second sooner. His new family should definitely like bulldog hugs. :)
Samson will be going to the vet tomorrow for a full annual exam and all his vaccinations. He is not yet neutered, but as soon as he has recovered from his injury, he will be fixed.
He does have some scar tissue and/or alopecia on the back of his neck, but skin scrapes showed that he is in the clear for any kind of mange. It's impossible to know what his stray time has been like, so he might have been attacked by another animal or just picked up some dermatitis. In any case, he is getting weekly medicated baths and should be ready for Westminster in no time.
While he is recovering, Samson is being kept separate from the other dogs, so his behavior with other dogs is unknown right now. He was in close quarters with other dogs and cats at TLAC, though, and also rode home with us right next to Tank and he has shown no signs of anxiety or aggression. More information on that as we learn more about him!
More information to come as we get to know Samson better.
Well, this guy just never ceases to impress me. He had his big day of beauty
yesterday so he fresh and clean, plus he had his full exam and vax. So late in
the afternoon we introduced him to the other dogs. He did just great - he will
have no issues with other dogs.
Once Matthew got home, we closely supervised him with Samson - again, he did
great. He has clearly been around kids before.
One thing I noted this morning is that he should probably be fed separately from
the other dogs, at least til he doesn't have to wait for his food to get mushy.
I'm sure he is hungry, and he didn't really get the concept of waiting his turn.
He jumped to eat out of Violet's little bowl - when I took it away from him, he
didn't jump or snarl or anything so I don't think it's a possessive thing. Just
a combination of hunger and bad manners.
I also went to give him a couple of treats (while I was holding Matt) - he sat
as he saw me reach into the bag, and then I stuck the treat out and he didn't
grab for it. He actually let me put it right to his mouth and he gently took it
from me and ate it.
He is not an "obnoxious" jumper but he needs some work on manners. He puts his
paws on the counter, the coffee table, you, etc. He doesn't resist when you make
him get down, but he has obviously been indulged on that.
The doc took another look at his jaw yesterday and said it is healing great. He
wants him to come back in about 3-4 weeks to have the metal sutures removed and
he will neuter him at that time too.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Samson or might be interested in adopting him. Adoption process includes application, vet check, home visit and fee.
My adoption fee is $550.00
