My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

A COMPLETED APPLICATION IS OUR FIRST STEP TOWARD ANY DOG ADOPTION.  WITHOUT THAT STEP, WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DISCUSS FLOYD WITH YOU.  PLEASE FIND THE ONLINE APPLICATION AT www.colliesheltierescue.org.

"Floyd" is a small, young merle-headed white rough Collie from the Illinois 198 hoarder confiscation.  He is UTD on all his vaccines and is neutered and microchipped.  Floyd is still a work in progress when it comes to being handled.  He is curious about humans but prefers the interaction to be on his terms, other than with his foster moms.  With Grace and Julia, he is a goofy couch hogging cuddle bug.  But he is not confident enough yet to have the same behaviors with strangers.  We think he would benefit from a group obedience class where he can observe other dogs on leash with their owners and see them having fun.  The key with this pup will be for his pack (both human and dogs) to prove to him that he is safe enough to grow into the Collie he is meant to be.

Dogs that have not had early socialization, like Floyd, need tons of encouragement and will do best with at least one human who can be with them fulltime.  Perhaps someone who works from home or has recently retired and is excited to be a part of Floyd's journey to be all the dog he can be.  He also needs a confident doggie companion to show him all the things that well-adjusted dogs need to know.  Perhaps even another young adult Collie to introduce him to "the ways of the force."  A securely fenced yard is a must.  When Floyd goes outside off leash, he immediately gets the "zoomies" and obviously requires clear boundaries.  He seems to be frightened by children so let's not include kids in his forever home.  Walking on a loose leash is something he has mastered and he enjoys up to a two mile walk a couple of times a week.

Priority will be given to previous Collie adopters. Because Floyd has a lot to learn, we will be especially careful to choose gentle and empathetic humans who will nurture him and who he can look up to as his forever parents.
