My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rotini is our longest resident and we`re not sure why! We`re hoping that his family is out there somewhere.

Rotini originally came to MCAS at the beginning of October 2022. He spent 8 long months before he was adopted; unfortunately, it wasn`t a good fit and he was returned about two weeks later because he wasn`t getting along with the other dogs in the home and has been at MCAS now since June 2023, coming up on his one-year anniversary.

Rotini has displayed barrier reactivity in his kennel, which is understandable after spending so much time at the shelter. He`s also spent limited time in playgroups because he hasn`t seemed to enjoy them in the past - he`s shown timid and defensive behaviors, even towards other dogs that try to softly engage him in play.

On June 16th, he was picked to join employees on a Snout & About day trip away from the shelter. He enjoyed an over 4 mile hike through Silver Springs State Park. He was excited but easy to get out of his kennel at the shelter and easily hopped right in the car; he was well behaved in the car though he did try to climb up front a few times in the beginning. He would occasionally step forward and leaned in for lots of kisses during the ride.

On the trail Rotini walked immediately behind the handler, right on her heel; he did not lead nor pull at any point. Rotini did seem slightly nervous in the new environment and looked to the handlers for reassurance. He was not paying attention to the tortoises or lizards as we passed them and completely ignored, or missed, them. Towards the end of the over 4 mile hike, he did begin to notice some of the wildlife, and was more excited see them, but redirected fairly easily and returned to the heel position.

After the hike, Rotini got a soft serve pup cup and he loved it. He was very well behaved for the entire trip and was also very affectionate in the car. Rotini did pass a few dogs on the walk and ignored most of them, including a very brief nose-to-nose greeting.

Rotini has been getting into playgroups more often and though he is still timid, with the right mix of dogs he has shown improvements and briefly engages in occasional play.

Rotini is available for adoption, trial adoption, foster, and even some more day trip opportunities to get him out of the shelter more!
