My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

EVERYBODY loves Oreos – especially this one!!  Our Oreo is a 6-year-old Havanese breeder surrender.  She has made some gorgeous babies, but her puppy-raising days are over now.  It is time for this momma to do what she loves for a change.  Just like any empty-nester mom starting her next life chapter:  it’s all about her now.

Oreo loves affection, but she is still skittish and a little shy.  She didn’t have much human interaction in the first part of her life, so she is learning on the fly.  She is a very, very happy dog – that tail wags non-stop and her little feet are constantly dancing like she is on stage doing the conga with Miami Sound Machine!  One look and you know this is the perfect definition of a “happy dance”.

Oreo has a BIG bark in that little body.  She doesn’t abuse it, but when there is something outside her home (or inside!) that she feels you need to know about, she is going to make herself heard.  Like any good watchdog, she is throwing up a warning so you are prepared for whatever is coming your way.  Protecting her family and her home is important to her.

Oreo loves to cuddle, but you have to start it.  She will come racing over for some chin scratches and butt rubs at the drop of a hat.  She hasn’t figured out how to get up on the furniture, even with the stairs or ramp right in front of her.  If you want her up there, you will need to pick her up.  She will be stiff as a board when you lift her – that level of physical contact is still very new to her.  Welcome, but still new and strange.  Once you sit down and settle her in your lap, however, you will feel her begin to relax.  She will stay there as long as you let her. She is learning that life is good in the lap!

Oreo is working on her housebreaking.  Where she came from, there were no specific bathroom expectations.  She went potty where and when she needed to, so this house breaking concept is foreign to her.  She does know she needs to go potty outside, and always does.  She also is using potty pads in the home since her foster mom works.  Sometimes she is right on, sometimes she is not.  This is a work in progress as she continues to put the pieces together.  This is just one more brand-new thing in this brand-new world for her to learn.  She wants to please her people and she is SO proud when she gets it right and earns a treat.  In her new home, there are bound to be accidents as she tries to learn the routine in different surroundings.  Please be patient and kind to her.  Give her the time and grace she needs to be successful.

Oreo is a Havanese.  This breed has hair, not fur.  In order to maintain this beautiful coat and be her super-sexy self, she will need to be groomed.  Please be aware of this requirement of ownership.  Ladies, you know it takes time, money & effort to look this gorgeous all the time!  Beauty is work!

Oreo recently had a dental and we knew it would not be great news.   Her foster mama kept finding teeth in her bedding that had fallen out of her mouth overnight.  The vet did determine that her teeth were in such poor shape that they all had to be removed.  This has not slowed down her eating or hindered her appetite in any way!  She is eating softened kibble, loving her pain-free mouth & rocking that “gramma pout” now that she has no teeth!

Oreo has not been tested with cats but does fabulous with other dogs.  She has met some older kids and allowed them to pet her, but she is still a little scared of new folks.  It takes her a little bit to warm up.

As any mom knows – the kids come first.  Each and every time.  Often moms treat themselves like an afterthought and then only after everyone else is taken care of.  Oreo has had this same experience. It is time for her to be front and center.  Getting attention instead of giving it.  Being cared for instead of caring for everyone else.  Being loved by a family, the way it should have been from the very beginning.

Oreo is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm.  She has also had a dental and has been professionally groomed.  Her adoption fee is $450
