Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Francesca came in with an adult male lab when her owner was forced to sell his home. She is approximately 10 – 11yrs old. She is friendly, walks well on a leash, and true to her breed she likes to smell everything on the ground. Overall, she is calm and easy going. Francesca is very vocal, even for a beagle, so she would probably not be appropriate for an apartment or condo. As a geriatric dog, she does have a few medical concerns. Thanks to the generosity of FOCAS a local volunteer association who funded her medical workup, we have been able to identify and address these issues.
She has chronic neck pain. This is most likely due to a herniated disk on her spine and she takes daily pain medication for it and will need to wear a harness for her walks for the rest of her life.
She also has hypothyroidism, a fairly common and easily treated disease in older dogs. She takes a thyroid supplement daily and has been well maintained on this medication.
During her medical evaluation, it was also noted that she had a heart murmur and mild cardiac disease. However, no medications were recommended at this time as she is not showing any clinical signs.
Francesca has been evaluated by our General Practitioner, a Veterinary Neurologist, and a Veterinary Cardiologist and they all feel that although she is geriatric and has some ailments, she would still be a wonderful companion for someone. Because it is not always easy to asses her pain, we would not recommend a home with toddlers. Please feel free to contact our veterinarian for further information.
