Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
** Xena is available for foster or adoption! Email applications@chicagocaninerescue.org to set up a meet + greet! **
You might be the type looking for a warrior to accompany you on an epic quest, or maybe you prefer to lovingly dote on your friends like royalty. What if we told you that we just so happen to know a dog that you can do both with? Meet Xena: Warrior Princess!
Xena is an adorable shepherd mix who came to CCR as a transfer in September of 2022. She’s a sporty gal who may seem a little shy at first, but is truly a princess deep down. She has a magnetic and fun-loving personality once she opens up, and loves to play more than anything else! Xena is a champion at fetching toys outside and relishes in the opportunity to show off her jumping abilities. She’s also one heck of a heart-throb! Known for her mastery of mooching for affection, just one look from her precious face will have you melting - we promise!
Xena is a nervous girl and has some initial reservations around new people, but she’s incredibly affectionate and actually loves human touch! She’s made numerous friends with volunteers and staff members, and because of this we think her anxiety is limited to the stress of being in a shelter environment. Xena is very strong and is known to pull on her leash during walks, so she’ll need continued basic obedience and manners training.
Maybe you’re ready for the adventure of a lifetime. Or maybe you’d rather take the day to spoil yourself and relax on the couch for now. Either way, Xena wants to be by your side!

More about this shelter
CCRF was founded in 2001 to help find permanent, loving homes for homeless dogs in our city. In just over seven years, CCRF has saved the lives of over 2,000 dogs, cats, kittens and puppies.
CCRF now assists the animals that are the MOST vulnerable in Midwest - the dogs and cats that are slated for euthanasia because they are too old, too young, injured, have disabilities, or have simply been overlooked for too long by potential adopters at other shelters.
