Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet MAURICE,
Maurice is a 7-8 yr. old chowchow mix, he weighs about 46 lbs, is neutered, up to date with vaccinations, microchipped - and happily blind.
End of July he entered the San Diego shelter as a stray, and consequently was checked for s microchip. microchip was found registered not to an owner but to a shelter from where he was adopted once. People rarely try to register a dog in their name after adoption in CA- so it’s easier to abandon.
Still the microchip pointed to an owner as he was registered as adopter. Unfortunately for the poor fellow his prior "owner" never came to claim him,
From the start he was labeled "aggressive": simply because one eye had already been surgically removed and made him leerier of movements and people he did not recognize. it was only some days after being in the shelter that staff assumed that he cannot see a lot out of the other eye- and he was diagnosed with a painful glaucoma and dwindling vision.
ADR.org heard of this situation and that the dog was meanwhile Rescue Only. And pulled him. he was given the name Maurice. Maurice went to a vet for complete health. The vet advised to remove his remaining eye, and he was also neutered.
Now Maurice is blind, but his keen other senses have sharpened, and he recognizes by smell.
Some dog owners believe as soon as their pet goes blind, it becomes helpless and must receive constant care. That could not be any further from the truth. As a matter of fact, many blind dogs can easily move around their home and live a happy life despite their condition.
It becomes even more important to regularly talk to your dog and call his name to guide him to you. Always have his attention that way also before you pet or touch him, so he does not become startled or scared. This is a common problem when children and strangers approach a blind dog.
Maurice will have a good life hopefully with your help and finding him a calm, stress-free home.
Maurice has been living with the founder ofADR.org and many videos have been made that ADR.org happily will share with you.
ADR.org can confirm that Maurice is smart, figures out a floorplan quite smoothly and quick making it possible for him to navigate. Barriers must be put up (in a potential home) if there are stairs.
Maurice walks on a leash on a harness in fast pace and likes his sniffs. his hearing and nose guide him.
if you are interested in Maurice, please send the rescue an email with a little bit about you and we will arrange a phone call to start with.
here is the email address: ADR@animaldefenserescue.org.
MAURICE looks forward to hearing from you!
Woof!
