This is what we know about Sparrow so far.
Sparrow formerly known as Magic has been an unexpected delight. She came to us with the knowledge that most of her time was spent in an outdoor Kennel or on a tie- out. We were told she is a runner. We have not given her the opportunity to see that side of her but we do know that she doesn’t try and bolt out the door whenever she is put out or we go in and out. She doesn't seem to mind cats or farm animals. She notices free ranging rabbits, chickens and ducks but when she is out she is tied up because we do not have a fenced in yard.
Crate training…. We say Sparrow kennel and she goes right in sometimes she hesitates but nothing that treats won’t solve. However that is about the only time she is treat driven. When outside she seems to want to be on the go and treats seem of little interest. She needs leash training, she pulls hard. She is easily redirected the other way but as stated she pulls and has very little care for treats. I think a fenced in yard will be a good thing for her.
Commands… She wasn’t responsive to her original name. We are not sure if that is because she didn’t hear it often, it didn’t carry well or it just wasn’t easily recognized by her. She is responsive to no and that is about it. But she learns quickly. In the short time she has been with us she is coming along with “stay”, “sit” and “off/down”. We do allow dogs on our couches and in bed so we may teach bad manners there ;).
Manners… We were not given much info for her habits and living style but we were led to believe that she has always or mostly been outdoors. She doesn’t seem to know that jumping on people isn’t ok, she if allowed, will just kind of tromple over or through people and animals (she has stepped on us many times while in bed or on the couch). She sometimes forgets her size so keep that in mind around small dogs and kiddos. She believes whatever is on your plate no matter where you sit is fair game… but again respects “no”. She didn’t seem to know what a couch, bed, stairs or many household noises were. Getting on or off a couch/bed was a new concept to her. She is becoming less skittish but still is a bit jumpy when things fall, putting away dishes, a kid suddenly yells etc. But she is adjusting. She does NOT like vacuum cleaners, she runs to another room. She also doesn’t seem to care for or know how to use long stairs; (ours our steep bare wood) she might react differently to wider or even carpeted steps, the three that lead into our house don’t bother her a bit. She is great with kids and other dogs, she is a lover and snuggler. Sparrow loves to wrestle and play with our two dogs and got along with them quickly. She is a big ol’ lap baby and likes to be touching someone when sleeping. She is also part kangaroo… She stands on her back legs and is almost as erect as one too. She loves to give kisses… many, many kisses.
Overall she is a great dog who enjoys chasing bugs, especially moths and flies. She needs plenty of toys, outside play, and attention/affection of the four or two legged kind or she will chew random things out of boredom. She needs to be taught some basic commands and manners. There really isn’t anything bad to say about her! We recommend her to a family not just a single person, we do think a fence is important but not necessarily required, give her plenty of time to adjust to her new environment especially if kept indoors. We have noticed that most of her past vet care was related to allergies but in the 3 weeks we have had her we have noticed no signs of any allergies so we are assuming it was environmental.
Sparrow is being fostered in Minnesota.
