Here's what the humans have to say about me:
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!
Fenway is a 4 year old, 16 pound Shih Tzu/Bichon mix, and he is a real dog’s dog. He’s active, loves to fetch, and would chase the mailman to the end of the earth if you gave him the chance. He enjoys cuddling with his foster mom and adapts well to new people and situations. He fits right in with his foster family’s pack and would be just fine in a home with other well behaved dogs, though it isn’t a requirement.
Fenway has a few behaviors that his foster parents are working with him to overcome. He is rather territorial, and will aggressively bark at the delivery truck or mailman, and he is laser focused on making them go away. Given the chance, he would probably snap at them, in defending his home. He may also snap if he is startled from a deep sleep. These are behaviors that can be addressed with training - training both for Fenway and for his new family. For instance, if he is sleeping, he should be wakened by calling his name rather than physically touching him. When he gets excited about seeing something happening outside, he can become vocal, but he’ll stop barking if you distract him (again, a training solution). He is okay with being in a crate, although his foster family lets him decide when to go in for a nap on his dog bed.
In spite of these few flaws, Fenway is really a sweetheart. He is an amazing cuddler, loves being petted and has the softest fur. He is a Velcro dog who follows his people from room to room and would be happiest in a home where someone is home with him most of the day.
Fenway will be a great addition to a family who will work with him on improving his manners. All described behaviors are normal for a playful, energetic dog like him, but not behaviors that are acceptable. His new family should be experienced dog owners who know how to consistently and successfully train a dog using positive reinforcement. Attending dog training classes is strongly encouraged. Fenway just needs some leadership to help him become the ideal dog and best friend you’ve ever had. Because Fenway is a high energy dog, it would be wonderful if his new home has a fenced yard in which he can play with his family. It’s important that his new family’s lifestyle is such that they will enjoy interacting with an active dog, and will participate in the exercise that he requires every day.
The following are requirements for Fenway’s new home:
• Must reside in a single-family residence. Fenway barks at things outside and could cause noise complaints in a home with shared walls.
• A secure, fenced yard. Fenway loves to run around outside and play fetch. A fenced yard will be key to his happiness. No invisible fences.
• Be committed to training Fenway, hopefully consulting with a professional trainer, so that he can become a happy, secure, well behaved dog who doesn’t feel that he has to defend his home.
• No children under 12, either living in the home or visiting.
• Someone home most of the day. Fenway has had an unstable life and deserves to have a best friend by his side from now on.
• Reside within 30 miles of Plymouth, MN and be willing to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion in September.
Fenway is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $370.00 plus $27.84 sales tax for a total of $397.84.
To meet Fenway, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.
