My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name is King. I am a 8 year old, purebred, AKC registered Black Lab. Upon coming to DLRR and my foster mom, I weighed in at 133 lbs!! My foster mom is helping me lose weight weekly. Currently, I weigh 123 pounds after my weigh-in today. I will always be a bigger boy since my dad weighed 88 lbs and my mom was pretty muscular too. Unfortunately, my previous owners thought that "loving me" meant to keep feeding me. I was overfed and hardly ever walked or exercised (like playing ball) so I became a couch potato. BUT I do like going on walks (I'm up to a mile twice a day) and I love playing with the ball so I would be super happy if you would do that with me. I, also like going for rides in the car. I like sticking my head out the window on cooler days and putting my face in front of the AC on warmer days. Right now, I need assistance (like stairs or a ramp) to get in/out of a truck or SUV. If you have a car, I have no problem getting in, it's getting out that I'll need assistance (my foster mom uses steps that she found on Amazon).

I am housebroken, crate trained, and I am also Doggie Door trained. I prefer to sleep on a dog bed vs. the cool tile. I'm not allowed on the furniture or beds and I will not try. I'm good with cats, whether they like me or not. I am good with dogs too. I don't have much interest in them. I haven't found my buddy yet but I will get along with whoever is in my area. I have never been around little kids but I have been around older children and I don't mind them either. I need some basic training, because I am a little stuck in my ways (I'm getting better though). In my previous home, I was allowed to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. My foster mom has been teaching me a few manners, like "leave it", "easy", "sit" and a fun new trick (shake).

I am looking for a family who will love me for me. Once I am settled in your home, I will give you the best ME I can be. I'm easy maintenance. I love being around my people but I also like a cozy spot to relax in. I need a family who will continue the progress my foster mom has started with my weight loss journey. I have been with my foster mom for about a month and I have lost 10 pounds! I'm starting to get my figure back but I still have a few (benign) fatty masses on my body. I'm currently on a couple of medications to keep the pain in my joints to a minimum. I enjoy doggie massages and if you stop petting, I will let you know I'm ready for more by putting my paw in your lap and looking at you with my puppy dog eyes.

My foster family has a pool which I have a little interest in. I like hanging out on their top baja step. My foster mom introduced me to the second step and that's good enough for me, right now. Maybe as I lose more weight, and can get around a little easier, I may learn to love the pool (I hear it's great exercise). When eating my breakfast and dinner, my foster mom makes me wait before I can chow down. I know it's time when I give her eye contact and I hear her say "good boy" and "okay". Like many four-legged friends, I do not like thunderstorms, fireworks or high winds and If I disappear in the house, look in the closet or under a bed because that is where you will find me. I would be happy just to stay there until these noises go away.
