My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet ravishing Raya! This gorgeous gal is looking for her forever family, and wants her new people to know these 10 things about her:

1. I am a Boerboel and I am about 5.5 years old. My life before rescue was awful. I was seized by animal control after they found me and several other dogs living in an abandoned trailer without food and water. When I first got to the shelter, I only weighed 65lbs! Luckily for me, the nice people nursed me back to health and then reached out to the Bullpen, who said I could come to the sanctuary to complete my rehabilitation.

2. As you can imagine, being locked in a bathroom and literally starving to death before rescue has made me insecure about food and barriers. I have been working really hard to overcome these obstacles and I’m doing great with the Bullpen staff, but I need my new home to be aware of my issues and recognize that even if I temporarily fall back on old, bad habits when I’m stressed out, it’s not who I am really am. My ideal family will be understanding, and patiently work with me to build confidence and heal from my past trauma.

3. Although I am very sweet and docile, I think I need to be in a home with adults only, or with teenage children that have experience with giant guardian breed dogs.

4. I’ve met lots of big dogs at the Bullpen, and I don’t mind them one bit. I would like it if my new home had a large, lower-energy male dog for me to pal around with, as long as we were fed separately always.

5. I’m unsure if I can live in a home with small dogs or cats, so a family with these types of pets might not be the best fit for me.

6. The words that best describe me are mellow, obedient, and loving.

7. My favorite things to do are lounging, getting ear rubs and butt scratches, and getting treats.

8. I am housebroken and crate-trained. I am good on a leash and I also know basic obedience and how to use a dog door!

9. I am fully vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped.

10. I am heartworm positive, but I’ve started treatment, and will come with all the medicine needed to complete it at my new home.

Ready to give Raya the forever home of her dreams? Fill out our Adoption Application, located at www.bullpenrescue.org under the 'work with us' tab.

We highly recommend that our potential adopters fill out an online application as soon as possible, as it greatly expedites the process of finding the right dog for your situation.

Our dogs are available for adoption nationwide but preference is given to adopters willing to do an in-person meeting. Please understand that our dogs are not adopted on a first-come, first-serve basis, but rather we strive for a "perfect placement" so we know that they will not be failed again.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

All adopters must fill out an adoption application, which is conveniently located on our website, www.bullpenrescue.org, under the "work with us" tab in the top right of the page.

After you submit your application, the form goes to our online database where it is accessed and reviewed by the members of our team. A rescue volunteer should be in contact within a couple of days to discuss your application, your expectations, and any of the dogs you’re interested in. If you don’t hear anything from us within a reasonable amount of time, don’t be afraid to reach out to us via email at info@bullpenrescue.org!

Once we’ve spoken to you, we’ll begin to check your references. When we’ve gotten the green light from your references, a volunteer will be in touch with you to set up a home visit. We are merely looking to see that you are able to provide a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for your dog to live in. At that time, we will also take the opportunity to inspect your fence, yard, and neighborhood.

As soon as your home visit has been completed and approved, you’re officially ready to adopt! At this point, a member of the Bullpen crew will be in touch to discuss the adoption contract/fee. Fees range from $50 for very old dogs to $500 for puppies. On average, the adoption fee is between $300-$400

Depending on the distance between you and your new family member, transport may have to be arranged (for applicants who live in close proximity to our facility in Georgia or one of our foster homes, this will not apply). We WILL NOT SEND A DOG VIA COMMERCIAL AIR, but we do offer two alternative options for long-haul transports:
(1) Commercial: We regularly use a wonderful, reasonably-priced ($150-$200) transport company that travels between Texas and Georgia and then up the East Coast on a weekly basis. The cost of the transport PLUS the cost of the mandatory health certificate must be covered by the applicant unless otherwise specified by the Bullpen.

(2) Private: We also have an individual who is available to do private transport, but applicants must be willing to cover the individual’s travel expenses and meet the driver at least half of the way.

Post-adoption, we reserve the right to make up to three follow-up visits, but we’ll make sure to give you notice beforehand, and the visits are generally informal. Additionally, we always encourage our new adopters to stay in touch with updates or pictures (email, text, or join the Bullpen’s Facebook page- Facebook.com/BullpenRescue) and to feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

More about this rescue

Located in the green rolling hills of Northeast Georgia, The Bullpen provides assistance and sanctuary for giant breed dogs and other vulnerable companion animals. We believe that by integrating grassroots community education and outreach, coalition building, support for existing animal welfare efforts, and our own independent rescue operations, we can eliminate needless euthanasia and improve the overall health and well-being of our four-legged friends.
