My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Courtesy post for Sweet Pea. She is not an AAHA dog but please contact us so we can connect you with the owner's son who currently cares for her.

"11 year old Sweet Pea
Pitbull (Red Nosed Pitbull?)
approx. weight 50lbs
approx. height/length 20 inches tall/32 inches long
up to date on vax (2/12/22 Rabies/DA2PPv/L4 from Pet Wellness Clinic, Brooklyn Park, MD)

Sweet Pea in my experience is good with all people, including children. My neighbors have kids, they are always excited to pet Sweet Pea and she is happy to oblige. I have a cat in my home, she doesn't bother him in any way, and while doesn't really let her get too close, I'll sometimes find them napping near each other. I want to say she is good with other dogs, but the circumstances that lead to her surrender make me wary.

Sweet Pea was owned by my elderly parents who have become increasingly unable to take care of her. They recently lost their house due to foreclosure/extreme hoarding. At this property, they had a big backyard they could let her out into and were very hands off with her in that regard. Now they live in a ground floor apartment and my mother has had no choice but to walk her, which she is physically incapable of doing most of the time. My stepfather is completely unable to care for Sweet Pea. Yesterday, 7/2/22, while on a walk with my mother, Sweet Pea had a run in with another dog. She and my mom turned a corner into the path of a woman and her daughter walking their dog. I don't know exactly what happened in the encounter, but both dogs were injured and my mother was pulled to the ground. Sweet Pea received a small puncture on the back of her neck behind her left ear, no stitches required and is currently on antibiotics (the vets at Animal Emergency Hospital in Bel Air, MD loved her and said she wouldn't stop giving them kisses while they examined her). I should say here that a police report was filed by the other dog owner, if needed I can look into acquiring it. I'm told the injuries to the other dog required stitches and I believe either the mother or the daughter were also injured in the scuffle. To my knowledge, nothing like this has happened before. My mother has been saying for a while she was going to put Sweet Pea down, but not for behavioral or health reasons, simply because she cannot care for this dog. It is an absolute shame this is the situation that led to my family looking for Sweet Pea's new home. I absolutely believe there's a better option for her.

Sweet Pea is very sweet as her name implies! As far as I know, she is healthy and happy for an older dog, maybe a little chonky. She's happy to sleep at your feet or curled up next to you. She enjoys going for walks, and she loves being off leash in a fenced in yard, running around. She'll play with stuffed toys, whether a little tug of war action, or just sitting on the floor and chewing on them. She's a little skittish with loud noises and will sing you the song of her people if she hears a sudden "something".  I don't know if I'd describe her as clingy, but she will follow you anywhere in the house. I'd like to think there's a home for her somewhere. I really don't perceive her as a problem unless you lack patience. She is currently laying across my feet and chasing something in her dreams as I draft this email.

I am currently located in Baltimore City. I will be housing and caring for Sweet Pea as I go through this process. We get along very well, and I have great sympathy and empathy for her situation. I am unfortunately not in a place in my life personally and financially to handle a dog."
