Meet Shelby! Shelby arrived at the shelter after being picked up as a stray. She had been seen wandering the area for a couple of weeks before she was called in. When we tested her, she was a solid pass, and we fell in love with her on the spot!
This poor girl had so many things wrong with her, it's kind of mind boggling. Want to hear all of the things this girl had going on? Here goes:
She had a very significant skin issue, and was missing roughly 50% of her hair. It wasn't mange, and it wasn't ring worm, so it was likely flea dermatitis, that had caused lots of secondary skin infections. She had a urinary tract infection when we met her, and then contracted giardia at the shelter. She was treated for both of those, and then developed an upper respiratory infection. When the spay was performed, it revealed that she was pregnant - not her first pregnancy either - and so a spay abort was done. Her ears appear to have been cut off with scissors, and don't even come close to matching. There are several scars on her head that are likely from encounters with another dog, or dogs. And . . . the icing on the cake is that she was heartworm positive.
This poor girl hasn't had much go right in her life, has she??? And yet, she's the sweetest, most cuddly girl you will ever meet.
When we pulled Shelby from the shelter, and moved her to our building, the upper respiratory infection that she was on an antibiotic for did not improve - it got worse - way worse. Shelby landed in the hospital for a few days with severe pneumonia, and there it was revealed that in addition to everything else, she has a significant heart murmur. Poor girl.
We brought her back to our building when she was discharged, and created our own version of an ICU, where it was quiet and she could recover. We bought a nebulizer for her breathing treatments, and started administering coupage to break up the congestion in her chest. Gradually, with lots of meds, lots of vet visits, and lots of love - Shelby has recovered from everything, and has also finished her heartworm treatment!
If comeback girls are your special kind of happily ever after stories, then this girl might be the one for you! Shelby is located in Atlanta. She can be adopted at any time, and will be available to go to her new home when she graduates in August.
