My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name:Cricket
Nickname: Cricks. Crickey. Cricketeer. Tiny. Tiny tot.
Breed:Chihuahua. In looks and personality.
Age: ~7 years
Current Weight: 4 pounds
Before OMD: Found as a stray and brought to the shelter. Shelter contacted us to tell us about this itty, bitty scared Chi... said itty, bitty scared Chi melted into our arms and came right with us out of the shelter.
Medical: We noted Cricket had weak/wobbly back legs at times and was seemingly unable to hold her bladder and bowels. Her neurological evaluation was consistent with a thoracolumbar myelopathy, or a problem affecting the spinal cord in her back - likely due to a past chronic disc issue or trauma. The neurologist felt that surgery would be too risky at this point and, instead, recommended for us to focus on management and rehabilitation.
What does this mean: Cricket is not in any pain, has an excellent quality of life, and her condition is not expected to progress. She simply needs to avoid high impact activity, stairs and jumping, and keep a lean body weight. She is incontinent and does need to have her bladder expressed at times during the day. She sports a diaper almost all the time. She is not phased in the least by this.
Energy level: Low with small, Cricket-sized spurts of energy.
What she loves: Getting held. Getting carried. Getting snuggled. Getting told how pretty she is. Giving kisses. Sunbathing.
What she doesn't love: Loud noises. The cold.
What makes us laugh: When she flops on her back with her tongue out. Her dance moves; there are several...there is the “I’m hungry” dance, the “I’m peeing” paddle, and the “I’m pooping” march.
Her theme song: “Tiny tot, tiny tot, oh how I love ya lots”. Must be willing to sing this to her on the reg.
Affection level: Maximum. If she could become one of your appendages, she would be thrilled.
Portability level: Uber-portable. In fact, multiple members of the rescue team have been spotted wearing her in a dog-carrying sling. She expects to be carried so much we’re not sure if she knows she’s a dog or if she thinks she’s a baby kangaroo.
You’ll have to get used to: Her fan club out in public. She immediately gains the adoration of everyone she meets… even the “I only like big dog” people. Breweries, working at the hair salon with foster mom, outdoor restaurants...she's ready.
Kids: Older, gentle kids only. She is fragile and isn’t going to be the household dog to play with children.
Dogs: Ehh. She is currently fostered with two larger-than-her Chihuahuas. She tolerates everyone and has even thrown down some play bows and zooms, but it took lots of time to get to this. She is a sassy little Chi who can be snarky about sharing attention and resources. She would thrive with a tolerant, submissive other dog, or as an only dog.
Cats: Dog-savvy cats who allow short games of chase.
House-trained: Cricket is 100% incontinent and is a full-time diaper wearer. Her humans will need to be dedicated to keeping her clean, comfortable, and expressing her bladder when necessary.
Crate-trained: Yes, but she isn’t the biggest fan. Besides, who needs a crate if you’re never going to put her down (wink, wink).
Ideal family: Someone who wants a ~4 lb. shadow...oh wait, scratch that, that would mean she's even too far from you.... Someone who wants to gain 4 lbs! Someone who is dedicated to Cricket's special needs.

Cricket is spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and microchipped. She's available for adoption to residents of CT and surrounding states. If you are interested in adopting, please complete an application from omdrescue.org.
