My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Paulette

Such a sad situation for Paulette to date, but we're making up for her misgivings by previous organizations and looking for the perfect adopter to give her the most incredible life.

Paulette was originally from Mexico and imported in October 2021 by another Toronto based rescue organization. Her records from Mexico state her date of birth is February 2021. I would say she's likely younger and the date was manipulated to make her 8 months old at the time of arrival into Canada, which is required for importing a dog commercially. Her date of birth is likely closer to April 2021, making her just about 1 year old now.

When Paulette, now 25 pounds, arrived to Canada, she was urinating everywhere and would leak and dribble urine at her foster home. She was shuffled around from foster home to foster home but the rescue never took a moment to actually address the medical concern happening with why Paulette had incontinence.

Paulette arrived an already, fearful puppy and with being shuffled around from home to home, that only added to her inability to grow more confident in a stable foster setting.

Eventually, the rescue sent her to boarding, still not addressing the incontinence.

Paulette sat in boarding for 6 weeks.

She was then transferred into the care of Mattie's Place. We immediately sought medical help for her and began her on a course of various medications, until we found one that seems to be working wonderfully for her. Her incontinence is completely under control at this time and we expect this progress to continue.

The medication is called Stilbestrol (1mg). The cost is about 2.75/per pill and at this point she is taking 1 per week and it keeps her incontinence under control.

This may be something she needs to take for life.

We will send a good supply with Paulette when she is adopted, so she is set up for success and this will give you time to also have her seen by your veterinarian for any future refills.

Paulette's foster Mom & Dad have been working really hard on building her confidence and helping her to be the best girl she can possibly be. She will need the help of a professional trainer to continue her confidence growth.

Paulette will do best in a home with a fenced in backyard as she does enjoy being outside and preference will be given to a home that has a resident balanced dog to continue teaching Paulette how to face the world with more confidence.

Paulette does great with all dogs she meets and though she has some stranger danger, she does warm up to her people quickly, when given a quiet space and time to do so.

We have no idea what breed Paulette is. We can guess maybe Lab, Vizsla and a mix of some other small breeds, based on looks, but there's really no certainty what she has in her for DNA.

If you're looking for a great dog, that will be a bit of a project dog but will reward you with a lifetime of love and companionship, Paulette may be a pup to consider.

FROM HER FOSTER MOM & DAD

What can I say about Paulette. Just like her name, she is one of a kind.

Everything you need to know about Paulette you can see in her beautiful eyes in each of her pictures. She is such a kind, loving, playful, yet timid soul. She loves to cuddle with both humans and dogs. The more love you show to her she returns right back to you.

Paulette is young with that puppy energy, so she needs her walks, playtime and attention. She loves to play with her toys and will be your best friend if you enjoy playing fetch or having her snuggle up beside you on the couch. Paulette is crate trained so there are no issues with a great night sleep or leaving her alone at home when you leave the house.

Paulette does all her bathroom business outside either in the backyard or on our daily walks. But she does not have bathroom cues yet so she relies on her humans to take her outside on a regular basis.

Given that Paulette is still young, she will benefit greatly from routine, structure and positive reinforcement. In only 6 weeks with us, Paulette has a full daily routine including breakfast / dinner, bathroom breaks, walks and quiet time while we work. She has taken very well to her routine and shows improved understanding and confidence each day.

When Paulette joined us, we realized that she is quite scared of the outdoors. Our training has been focused on structured walks to expose her to loud noises, busy streets and other distractions (dogs, people, etc.)

Paulette will benefit from a patient new family that will reinforce her training to make sure she continues her great progress and becomes the great outdoor walking dog that she is proving to be.

Paulette has quickly become a perfect “sister” to our dog. She is playful, friendly and gentle with our dog. We have not exposed her to other dogs, cats, or children, but given her success with our dog, we are positive that she would enjoy another dog buddy.

If you’re looking for an energetic, loving, playful and genuinely amazing dog… Paulette is your lady!

Paulette will thrive with a loving, gentle and patient new owner that will provide her with the structure, training and stable home that she deserves and needs as a young beautiful pup.

As of today, though our protocols could change tomorrow, we are still moving forward with adoptions. Our process has changed from some of the previous elements: We are a registered animal welfare organization, so we are deemed an essential service.

All paperwork completed online, video home visits, meet and greets outside respecting social distancing, leashes/collars/supplies wiped down and disinfected (GermiCide 3 wipes), disinfectant on the dog prior to handoff (Aqueos wipes for dogs)

-----------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in his current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.

We do not specifically kid/cat test our dogs when they arrive at Mattie's Place. That just wouldn't be fair to the dog or child/cat.

We also do not claim, endorse, suggest or hint at, that any of our dogs are hypoallergenic, low shed or no-shed.

Adoption fee includes: spay/neuter, deworming, defleaing, vaccinations, nose to tail health exam, leash|collar, 6 months of preventative based on season/need, custom dog tag, dishes, poop bags, food and any extras she has accumulated in foster care.
