My story

Our 50-pound, 4.5-year-old Schnauzer mix River is extremely loving and affectionate with his own people, but it’s a different story with visitors. Negative behaviour was created as a result of having been put in a room when visitors arrived. Because of this, River needs an experienced adopter who is prepared to work with him with a basket muzzle to help manage and overcome this reaction when people visit his home.

LIFESTYLE: River needs a calm single or couple with a quiet lifestyle and few visitors. A semi-rural or rural environment would suit him best. River would not be suitable for apartment life, and no dog parks or children please.

ACTIVE: River is playful and moderately active. He enjoys walks when there is not a lot going on around him, but responds well to redirection and positive reinforcement.

OTHER PETS: River would be fine as an only dog, but a well-behaved female canine role model may be beneficial.

Don’t be fooled by River’s cuteness. He needs a dedicated pack leader to show him the way. If that sounds like you, a very loving companion awaits.

If you are interested in adopting a Kiko dog, please e-mail us. You will be asked to complete an adoption application so that we can get to know you better. A home visit is also mandatory, often with the dog that interests you. Our adoption fee is $650 for adult dogs and $750 for puppies under a year old, and all our dogs are examined by a veterinarian, defleaed, dewormed*, vaccinated, sterilized and also tested for heartworm and lyme disease. *Please note that puppies adopted at a young age may require ongoing deworming for up to six months. Although this is a relatively inexpensive treatment, Kiko is unable to cover this and will only take care of deworming while the puppy is under the care of the rescue.

Kiko Dog Rescue and Adoptions is a small non-profit rescue group located west of Montreal near the Quebec/Ontario border and is named after a little black Pug rescued from a puppy mill. We are dedicated to helping dogs that have found themselves homeless, whether they are from a pound, puppy mill or a home surrender, by placing them in the loving forever homes they so deserve. All dogs that come into our rescue receive whatever veterinary care they require, including everything from dentistry to surgery to help correct an uncomfortable or painful medical condition. Our dogs are not kept at a shelter. We rely on the generosity of foster families. If you are not ready for a permanent adoption and would like to consider fostering on a temporary basis, please contact us for more information. Food and veterinary care is provided by Kiko—all you need to provide is a warm loving haven.
