Here's what the humans have to say about me:
KIRBY is looking for a family of his own, but will need AN EXPERIENCED ADOPTER or someone willing to work hard with him!
Location: Greenville, South Carolina, but will transport to his perfect family
Good with dogs: yes
Good with cats: yes
Good with kids: no
Approximately 4y/0 neutered male, Flat Coated Retriever, Up to date on all vaccines, heart worm / flea / tick preventative
Kirby is, understandably, anxious and nervous because his previous family left him at the shelter. We estimate that Kirby is almost 4 years old. Based off what we have gathered, he was picked up by his previous owner (likely from a breeder) and then COVID hit. He was never socialized for his first few years, and then dropped into a scary shelter. Kirby is understandably wary of strangers.
*** BITE HISTORY ***
He has 3 notable negative interactions: 1) His original adopter dropped some food at a cookout and, when picking it up, Kirby flung his head upwards and hit her in the face with an open mouth. 2) While in a tiny crowded meet and greet room, Kirby bit a woman’s forearm as she turned to leave. 3) Again, in a tiny, crowded meet and greet room, A potential adopter reached behind him and patted him on the head while also treating Kirby with the other hand. Kirby was surprised and bit the man. Man acknowledged he approached Kirby poorly, although that is no excuse for a bite.
Kirby has completed The Dog Wizard’s two week boot camp training program. Because of this training, Kirby can attend free weekly support/maintenance classes at any Dog Wizard location in the country.
Kirby will need someone to continue occasional training with him and provide him with rules and structure. He has been in confinement in a kennel for the last year and was not properly socialized by his previous family, so someone without a lot of new visitors will be best for him. Kirby is great at maintaining a schedule and has excellent manners and boundaries right now, due to training. His future adopter will need to immediately maintain this training to keep Kirby aware of his place in the home.
Kirby is great in a crate and also pretty responsible when left alone indoors. He is very intelligent but needs someone to be his boss so that he can let his guard down and be a carefree dog. Kirby does not need an intense amount of exercise (although he can handle it), but he will definitely need to have at least some structured exercise each day. Kirby LOVES to play fetch, and he is great at bringing the ball back and dropping it for another round. Or 100 more rounds… This dog would be an excellent hiking companion!
