My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Brownie (formerly known as Shiny) is a 3-5 year old soft coated wheaten terrier mix who was rescued from the shelter on 02/03/10. One of our foster moms.... whose latest foster dog had just been adopted first spotted Brownie on the shelter's website on 02/01, the day she arrived at the shelter. The photo of Brownie tied up on the doorstoop and her sad brown eyes broke her heart. She contacted us and asked if we could keep an eye on her...meaning make sure that she was adopted or saved during her 5 day stray hold period. Well, due to the photo that Animal Services posted and the fact it was dated in December, we just had a feeling Brownie might be either an owner surrendered dog or a confiscated dog and also may be in need of medical care, so we called to check her status right away. We were told that she was an owner surrender. This means she was subject to euthanasia as soon as she walked in the door. We made sure that Brownie was good with people and with other dogs and then we placed our committed rescue hold on her to keep her safe and we were able to pick her up after her spay surgery. We will never know the circumstances of that photo and why she was surrendered, but we speculate that the owner was most likely faced with either pay a fine and/or face charges OR surrender the dog. In Miami-Dade County, it is illegal to chain a dog up. Brownie was so filthy and so painfully matted that the Animal Services vet shaved her down somewhat while she was under anesthesia for her spay surgery. When we picked her up it was then painfully obvious that she was not much else but skin and bones. It is hard to see in the photos, but her bones stick out with no meat on them at all. Brownie also had fleas and hookworms. It is obvious that she had not been properly cared for at all and we are so grateful that we are able to help her. Brownie spent the night at our vet's office and traveled the next day with one of our volunteers to ALL DOGS HAIR HAVEN in Naples for a much needed bath and a groooming. Since she was shaved down by Animal Services, the wonderful groomers were only able to clean up her cut and we know she will look wonderful as it grows in. We also know she must FEEL wonderful already. Brownie was then picked up by another volunteer and transported to her foster home.

Brownie is living with kids, a cat and other dogs. After her first night in foster care her foster mom said "
Yep, I am naming her Brownie! She has the prettiest brown eyes. She is VERY sweet. She would NOT come in to the kitchen AT ALL.... She didn't want to come in to the bedroom either.... She kind of wandered around, like she was not sure what to do in the house.. She slept in our bed all night, jumped right up in it! She does seem to be afraid of people, especially if you move too fast, so I move slower towards her and speak softly. She was slow to wag her tail so when she finally did it was wonderful to see... The cat hates her. She does not seem bothered by the cat... Actually tried to play with her.... Even barked at the cat! Which scared us all, because that was the 1st peep she had made! So far seems to be completely potty trained. She seems to love my husband! Followed him around!!!! She is a doll! Didn't eat much last night though.... Hopefully that will pick up this weekend! I will know more over the weekend!"
