Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Chappie (M) is an 1 year old American Bulldog. He is currently living with his foster parents and 2 canine foster siblings in a detached house in the country!
Chappie is house and crate trained. Chappie does like to drink a LOT of water in one go, so his furever home will need to keep an eye on how much he drinks and make sure to take him out frequently if he's had a lot to drink recently. Chappie also hates the cold and will not ask to be let outside, so he may need reminders about bathroom breaks in the winter! This stubborn boy does well when taken outside regularly like a puppy, and crate time when he isn't being watched.
Chappie is a bulldog and does have a stubborn and pushy side. On intake Chappie was barking in his crate for attention, however with proper exercise, mental stimulation and training he is learning to be respectful at rest time. Now that he has settled into his foster home, he is good in his crate but will whine with high activity like contractors, visitors, or new dogs in the house. Chappie is a very happy and social pup, and has FOMO. :)
Chappie is not a high energy dog but does benefit from mental exercises to make him pass out on his dog bed in the evening. Even a little training session can make him zonk right out, and enrichment toys like Kongs are great for fulfilling him. Chappie is a bit socially awkward and acts like a big full grown puppy! He can be rambunctious, hyper and unaware of his size, and can be a bit clumsy! Chappie is working on puppy behaviours like jumping up, mouthing, picking up object (but he doesn't chew them or get destructive) and being calm indoors. Life is a party!
Chappie is good with other dogs, although he is a pushy bulldog and not all other dogs enjoy his play style. Chappie doesn't seem to care much about social cues, and does need reminders from his people to leave his foster brothers alone when he is pestering them. While he seems to understand that his foster brothers aren't interested in playing with him, sometimes Chappie's 10yo canine foster brother will be showing teeth and telling him to leave him alone, and Chappie just wants to lick the top of his head. He really is a big loveable dopey dog and makes his human foster parents laugh daily! Chappie has not been tested with cats.
Chappie loves all people but does have bad puppy habits like mouthing, jumping his front paws off the ground, and stepping on his foster parents calves when they are walking. Chappie is very gentle with his mouth, but does like to put it on everything and can be uncoordinated taking food. For this reason he would do best in a home without children, or with older kids who can participate in training. With proper structure and boundaries, Chappie is very affectionate and loves to snuggle up and nap with his people! Bring on the belly rubs!
Chappie has a high food drive and loves his training sessions! He knows the very basics like sit and crate on command, but does need a lot of work on pushing his weight around, pushing through doors, pulling on leash and selective hearing. Chappie does need a lot of repetitions to learn new commands, but once he knows them he loves to show off!
FIRST IMPRESSIONS ON INTAKE:
-Good with dogs
-Unknown with cats
-Unknown with kids (likely good but would do best with older kids who can participate in training, and won't be knocked down easily)
-OK in crate, will whine while settling
-Working on housetraining
-Super pushy! Likes to push his weight around. Would do best with lots of structure and boundaries.
-Pulls heavily on leash, has a lot of work to do.
-Loves all people, affectionate, goofy.
-Takes treats gently, but isn't very gentle with play style. Chappie is a bull in a china shop, often walks into people, mouths at hands and paws 24inches up.
-Can be stubborn
-Hates the cold
-Needs lots of work on training, and structure and boundaries
-Ok in car, walks around a bit, settles after a while
Fun Facts:
-First Morning Impulse: Bolt out of crate, jump on people happily.
-Backyard Behaviour: Tries to get back indoors
-Best Traits: Goofy and affectionate with his people, loves naps, sweet, loves training.
-Needs work: Jumping up, mouthing, leash skills, house training, whining for attention, general training and respecting boundaries
