Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Hi! I'm Emma. I'm a Maltese, 7 years, 8 lbs, and... I have diabetes! My owner surrendered me to MRC prior to my diagnosis. I became quite ill as the sugar failed to reach the interior of my cells. My small frame is clearly visible as my skin presses against my skeleton. I am very weak and refusing to eat. My Foster Mom walks me into the vets office... I don't have an appt but they work me in cause I'm really, really sick! My blood glucose is 530...Normal range is 80-120!
The Vet tells my Foster Mama that he will start me out on 2 units of insulin by injection every 12 hours. My Mama feeds me canned food twice a day... 5:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. When I finish my food, Mama gives me my insulin injection by creating a skin pocket at the back of my neck. It's a very fine needle so it inserts easily and the dosage flows freely into the skin pocket.
My Foster Mama subsequently took me back to the vets office to have my blood glucose tested. Frequent testing is required to ensure that I receive the most effective insulin dosage. Blood glucose levels went from 530 to 229 to 364 (I gained a pound of weight this week). Blood glucose levels in excess of 250 can result in blindness. The Vet upped my dosage to 3 units!!! Since implementing the 3 units, my Blood Glucose has gone from 364 to 117 to 104. The vet now has me on Blood Glucose testing every 2 Weeks!!! Celebrating my progress!!!
