My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Scarlet
Nicknames: Scar Scar, Bunny, Missy
Breed: We sent her picture to our vet's office and let them know we were bringing in a Min Pin mix. Their reply? "No, you're not. You're bringing in a Chihuahua mix." So, there you have it, folks, she's a Chihuahua.
Age: ~10 Years
Weight: 12 lbs.
Before OMD: It was a right place/right time situation. One of our coordinators was at the shelter picking up another dog when she saw Scarlet being impounded. We immediately raised our hand to take her in as soon as her stray hold ended and this bald-tailed little lady with a terrible skin infection, hernia, horrendous teeth, and nuclear sclerosis, became an OMD pup.
Medical Deets: She had her hernia repaired and her teeth cleaned and her skin is all healed up. She has arthritic back knees and nuclear sclerosis but she can still see quite well. It sounds like a lot, but overall, she is a spunky older gal and in great shape for a senior lady.
Energy Level: Senior Low-Medium. She's surprisingly spry when she trots around the house and yard or runs back and forth down the hall looking for her stuffed animals (aka babies). She is also perfectly happy relaxing.
What makes us laugh: When she flips onto her back and wiggles around to scratch her back itchies. When she winds up in extremely precarious positions, often wedged between couch cushions and requires assistance to flip back over. Basically, she's a turtle.
What we love most: Her temperament- she's a perfect combination of silly, carefree, and total sweetheart. When she hops like a bunny, with her little ears flapping in the breeze. Her slow-mo zoomies. Her not-so-subtle nuzzles for more pets. Her utter dedication to being a part of whatever her family (human and dog) is doing.
What she loves most: Her foster mom. Pets and under-the-chin scratches. Blanket burrowing. Sunbathing. Meal time (on time, of course). Car rides. Walks.
Moonlights as: An overzealous Dorm RA. She likes to keep things in order so she's always checking everything out and doing a thorough sweep before she settles. She is also sure to know exactly where her babies are at all times and she guards the bathroom door for her foster mom whilst showering.
Commands: Nope, none. You say "Sit" and she'll look at you like you have 3 heads.
New People: Momentarily shy but once they offer pets, all bets are off. You have a new best friend.
Kids: Older kids only please. Scarlet is in her golden years and, as far as we can tell, she has not been socialized with young kiddos.
Dogs: She has met dogs of all sizes and is in love with her Chihuahua foster brother who she follows everywhere (think Elmyra Duff from Tiny Toons). We think she would really like another dog in her home but she is on the dominant side, has no sense of personal space, and does not take correction well from dog friends or foes, so she would do best with a more submissive and tolerant dog sibling.
Cats: No problem, happy to co-exist and share her space with cats.
Housetrained: She's a stubborn, older Chihuahua, so...kinda? She is 100% pee pad trained, and working on embracing the great outdoors (no thank you to the cold and precipitation).
Crate Trained: Not interested and doesn't need it.
Must Haves: A human or two who 1) appreciates and reciprocates her love and affection, 2) are up for short walks, and the occasional carry when her knees hurt, 3) provide lots of stuffies for chewing and collecting, 4) are more than happy to share their couch.

Scarlet is spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative and microchipped. She's available for adoption to residents of CT and surrounding states. If you are interested in adopting, please complete an application from omdrescue.org.
