Cannon is a 17 pound 10 month old terrier who was rescued from the shelter on 02/07/10. Cannon was originally adopted from the shelter when he was a 2 month old puppy and he was returned to the shelter as an owner surrender on 02/04. Owner surrender dogs are not given a hold period like stray dogs are given. All stray dogs over 6 months of age are held for a 5 day period. This gives their families a chance to locate them if they are lost. All dogs under 6 months of age are only given 24 hours and all Owner Surrender dogs can be subject to euthanasia the minute they walk in the door. Cannon is sweet as can be and gets along with kids and with other dogs. We can't imagine why he was surrendered and can only think that it must have had to do with life or financial circumstances. Cannon was picked up by a volunteer and spent the night at the vet's office with rescue dog Blue. He will be examined and then will travel to his foster home.
Update 03/03/10 On 02/09/10 Diesel made the trip across the alley and stopped for a couple of days with one of our volunteers. Diesel was given a bath and looked so shiny and beautiful afterwards. Diesel walked in the house as if he had always lived there and he had a lot of fun playing with the other dogs in the house for the next couple of days. Diesel also slept with his temporary foster parents and other dogs and they learned that he just loved to snuggle up and burrow under the covers. Another thing that they noticed about him is that when they went to pick him up, he would scoot away and for a little guy, he was quick! On 02/11/ Diesel continued his journey and he made his way to his foster home in Bradenton. After his first night there, his foster mom wrote " He is not food motivated, but loves to play fetch and toys in general. Likes to wrestle too! Sleeps without any issues crated. Just an all around great little snuggle bunny. Great manners on leash and around your feet, no worries about stepping on him, he judges his walk zone very well. After several days in foster care, Diesel's foster mom let us know that Diesel was having some problems with urinating....that he was occassionally having accidents, but that he did not seem to squat or lift his leg when he went and it often just dribbled down on him and also that he sometimes would lap it up! Well we had never heard of this and decided that we needed to make sure this wasn't caused by a urinary tract infection or some other medical reason. A few days later, Diesel was taken to the vet's office at Braden River Animal Hospital and he spent two days being monitored and also had a urinalysis. On 02/26 we got the results back from the lab and all test came back normal and negative and Diesel is a healthy boy. We do feel that Diesel will do best in a home with children 12 or older. He does not bite, but he does challenge a physical correction.....His foster mom thinks that it's almost like someone did alot of grabbing and he was fearful of hands. She has been working with him on trust...collar grabbing...picking up and crating...and he is TONS better and will now get into his crate with just a touch of his collar. His leash training is good, but he will pull if he really wants something. Diesel's foster family has really enjoyed their time with him and on 03/03/10 his foster mom provided us a wonderful update. She said "His crate training is good and he has not had any accidents in the house in about three or four days now and he goes as soon as he is taken out. I do feel if he is not crated (when left alone) he will go in the house.....something to consider. He is taking the correction well when told not to lap his pee while he is going and his aim is a bit better. He kind of squats and pees....I figure he gets pee on himself about 1 out of every 4 times....not large amounts either and I usually use a baby wipe. Cats are ok and other dogs too as long as they are not too overbearing. He gets frightened and hides when my dogs (big dogs) show him too much attention. I have been taking him everywhere with me and he is great in the car. We went to Petsmart again this weekend and he wanted and let everyone pet him....Loves people. He did bark at my neighbor, but he was holding lots of mail, then stopped barking and accepted the petting. He is very appropriate about what he chews for his age and will always choose a toy over anything else. HE LOVES TOYS and will steal socks out of the laundry room to play with. I call him my little Velcro puppy. He wants to be where you are and if you leave the room and don't let him follow, he will whine, but then settles after a few minutes and then is super happy to see you again and jumpy. He loves to snuggle. I have done alot of work with him and NOT letting him sit with me and it is still taking an average of three minutes of "No, Down" until he figures he has to sit someplace else. Diesel, middle name.....Lap Dog. I have never seen him lay on the floor unless it's a dog bed.....at the moment he has pulled the cushions over and is sleeping on the couch on the cushion. He has SO many good qualities....I am not a little dog person, but I really, really enjoy Diesel and I'm rather attached to this little bugger. We have talked about adding him to our family, but our Lab has a bad habit of over correcting, so this is not the perfect home for him.
