Here's what the humans have to say about me:
My name is Charlie & I’m a 5 year old handsome red & white basset who is looking for a quiet, structured home to call my own. You see I’ve had many homes & sadly I’ve been mistreated. Maybe I was a little too stubborn or not socialized properly when I was younger or maybe an inexperienced dog owner expected too much from me too soon. I’ve definitely been let down and misunderstood in my short life. That is until SBR heard I needed their help. They’ve helped me calm my fears and learn to trust that humans are really good & I can be safe in their care. My foster family has worked with me for several months and I’ve learned to trust & to listen to them, although on occasion I do like to use some of my most stubborn basset skills that I’ve honed over the years. My foster parents and I have a great relationship because they understand me and know deep down that I’m really a very good boy. I just act grumpy at times because my anxiety kicks in. In the morning I like to wake up slowly and roll around on the bedroom floor. Most days my foster Dad rubs me all over, he lets me kiss him and he reminds me that I’m a very good boy. He is my very favorite person! We have built an incredible bond because I know I can trust him and he loves me.I prefer to sleep most of the day away in my foster mom’s office or on a big comfy dog bed. I also enjoy chasing lizards around the pool and patio. I love to sit in the yard by myself and sniff the air or play with my toys. I truly enjoy being alone and decompressing by laying in the sun, I also enjoy roaming around the yard sniffing for things. I’ve always been respectful of my foster parent’s home. I am totally housebroken, leash trained & I sleep in a crate at night. Sometimes upon waking, I’m in a bad mood because I feel the need to defend myself. Once I’m wide awake and realize I’m safe I’m perfectly fine and happy to see people. I have bad memories surrounding a crate and I’m working on understanding that it’s a safe place for me at night and the other dogs in my home are safe too because I’m all snuggled in my comfy orthopedic bed. I take medicine to help my anxiety. I also take medicine for my back because my hind end is shaky and sometimes my back hurts. The medicine helps me feel a lot better and I will have to take this for the rest of my life but it’s relatively inexpensive. I know how to sit for treats especially chicken jerky. It’s my favorite! When it comes time for breakfast and dinner I’m better off in a separate area because I like to guard my food before I decide to eat it. I’m perfectly fine around the dinner table, in fact, I like to lay nearby and I don’t beg I just want to be close to the people who care for me. I’m very smart and know how to open the garbage can so I can steal a quick snack. That is until my foster Dad put a child lock on it, rats! I need a quiet, structured home with experienced, patient dog owners who will consistently be the pack leader and not let me take over. I will also require someone willing to put in the time to work with me & realize that it will probably take me many months to adjust and trust that my new home has people who love and care for me. Due to my fear aggression, I am unable to be adopted to a home with children, dogs or cats. I prefer a nice, quiet environment and I’m not into barking unless I hear the door bell or maybe I’ll let out a few barks when you come home as I’m always so happy to see people. I’m a less is better kind of guy, one or two human pack leaders would suite me just fine for now so if you’re an experienced owner & I sound like I might be the boy for you please consider adding me to your home. Once we learn the ropes and figure out how to live with each other you won’t regret it. I promise. Luv, Charlie aka Chuckles McNuckles
