My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Little Doris came to us from animal services just howling in pain and confusion! Due to an injury of some sort her tail needed amputation and is now only about 2 inches long. It was swollen, and red, and you could just tell how much it was hurting her by her frantic breathing and constant circling.

Her right eye was also just a memory, from some previous puncture-type injury it cannot be brought back, but at least she is in no pain from that. After some really good pain meds she calmed down and began to respond very well, and a treatment plan was begun.

She was taken to the Vet for some bloodwork, and a good once-over, after which an appointment was made to visit the Ophthalmologist for a complete eye evaluation. The news was not good - Not only was the right eye gone (at least it doesn’t need to be removed), but there is retinal degeneration in the left eye. This means that eventually she will lose the sight in that eye also.

The good news is that it may even take years, and we have a treatment plan to hold off the inevitable. By taking several supplements daily (fish oil, grape seed extract, and lutein), we are hoping to stave off the antioxidants that do the damage.

When Doris gets out of the “In Waiting” category our fervent hope is that the right home for her can be found where she can settle in, and perhaps even bond with another dog whom she can follow around. That way, if she does lose her vision over time she will already be familiar enough with her surroundings that it will not matter as much to her.
