My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Jake! This big fella is a straight-up cuddle bear. For a Brittany, he’s relatively big – 52 pounds. But he’s also extremely low-key, which has an amazing, calming effect. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a Brittany so “chill”. He is a people lover, and has to be with you wherever you go. I work from home, and he loves to be asleep by your desk while you’re working. Jake gets along with cats and dogs, although he does sometimes get a little jealous and “grumbly” if another dog is getting attention. But he’s still the submissive one. I have not seen any dominant, “alpha male” qualities about him at all. He loves being inside and outside, but he does require a fence. We have crate trained him in foster care, so he is able to spend time in a crate without issues (he charges into his crate for a treat!). He sleeps very well at night on his bed and doesn’t even snore.
His favorite things are taking naps with his owners, walks, car rides, and playing tug with other dogs. He is not the best walker on a leash, but he is getting better. He’s also very bright and quickly picks up new commands and house rules. I have been amazed at how well behaved he is inside. If he has any bad habits, it’s probably that he can get on a barking streak outside when he sees people or hears other dogs. But his attentiveness is an advantage too -- Jake has good “guard dog” habits and lets you know when someone is at the door. He even has a cool, low growl. I’m sure it sounds intimidating from the other side of the door! But as the saying goes, he’s all bark, no bite. After all, he’s still a Brittany and is easily coerced by belly rubs. History
Jake is an owner surrender to Rescue. His previous family had a new baby, and the baby suffered from debilitating pet allergies. With deep regret, they had to let Jake go. Jake’s mom and dad had him since he was a puppy. He had amazing care and love. This was fortunate, as Jake had hip dysplasia, which required corrective surgery in 2006. The surgery was a success, and Jake hasn’t had issues since then. He’s able to sprint around our yard with ease. Side effects are a little stiffness and less of a desire to jump (which can be a good thing). Jake won’t be a dog to jump fences or jump up on company. His other challenge is that he had a history of mild seizures, which requires a daily does of a very inexpensive medication called Phenobarbital. He has been evaluated by our vet who is a seizure specialist, and the reports are great. He’s doing very well on his medication and has not had a seizure in almost a year. If he continues to do well, Jake could be weaned of the meds altogether. He is Heartworm negative, neutered and is up to date with all shots. All health records can be provided.

In the short time we’ve spent with Jake as his foster family, he is an extremely cool, calm Brittany (especially compared to our other brits, who suffer from a case of “irrational exuberance”). He would be perfect for any home.
