My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello there! My name is Gandolf, and while my face might be frosted like a wise old wizard, my heart is as youthful and vibrant as ever. I’m a charming 12-year-old pit mix with a magical ability to make you smile every single day. My journey hasn’t been easy—after being abandoned by my previous owner, I’ve spent the last two years and 10 months at the shelter. They’ve taken wonderful care of me, but what I truly long for is a forever home where I can live out my golden years with someone who understands and cherishes me.
I’m a people-lover through and through. There’s nothing I enjoy more than cuddling up close to my favorite humans, basking in the warmth of their love. I’m an excellent companion for car rides (I ride like a pro!) and a devoted fan of Nylabones—those are my absolute favorite chew toys. And did I mention I know how to shake paws? Yep, I’ll charm you with my wizardly tricks.
Even though I’m a bit older, I still have moments of youthful energy—get ready for some joyful zoomies when I’m feeling playful! Of course, I also know how to relax and will happily spend quiet moments by your side.
I do come with some quirks (don’t we all?). I have anxiety, so I can get nervous when left alone. I also need time and patience in new situations—I’m not a fan of being rushed or pushed into things I’m unsure about. But don’t worry—with a little understanding and a slow approach, I’ll warm up and show you just how deeply I can love.
Because of my history, I’ve been labeled a bit of a “misfit,” and I need to be the only pet in the home. No other dogs or cats, please—but trust me, I have more than enough love to give.
One thing you should know is that I’m on thyroid medication for life. The good news? It’s affordable, my levels are perfectly managed, and I feel great!
If you’re not ready to adopt, I’m also available for foster—I just don’t want to spend the rest of my life in a shelter. I have so much love to give, and I’m ready to share it with someone special.
If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion with a quirky, wise soul, I’m your guy. Let’s make the rest of my life a magical adventure—together.
Love, Gandolf

Additional adoption info

In completing this application, I hereby affirm that all information given is true and accurate to the best of my knowledge. There is a one time, HOLD fee of $25.00 for ANY adoption. This includes sponsored animals.
We do verify current pets are up to date with vaccinations. If you rent, you have to have landlord approval. Please do not place the HOLD fee if you are unsure.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-$300 for dogs and $85-$100 for cats. Adoption fees for other types of animals vary. Our adoption fees help to cover our costs for spaying/neutering, the rabies vaccine and county tag, puppy/kitten vaccines, heartworm, leuk/aids, fecal testing, and microchipping. Our adoption fees in most cases do not even cover the basic veterinary costs,
ANY EXTRA CONTRIBUTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED AND GO TOWARDS FEEDING AND SHELTERING THE ANIMALS HERE.

Q. Exactly what vaccinations has my new pet received?
A. All dogs are vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza. Pets over 5 months old also receive their Rabies vaccine and county tag (dogs and cats). The Rabies vaccine is a Statewide requirement and you MUST register your new pet with your county. Please check the laws in your county regarding registration procedures and costs.

Q. Why does my new cat/dog have to be spayed/neutered?
A. Our goal at H.A.L.O. Rescue is to save as many lives as possible. Nearly 70,000 puppies are born in the United States every day. Only 25% of those puppies will find loving homes. Five million of them are euthanized in shelters every year. That’s one every 6.5 seconds. Decreasing the overpopulation of abandoned and abused animals is our highest priority. By spaying/neutering we are not only ensuring better health for your pet, we are also decreasing future accidental pregnancies, which causes overpopulation. Because of our strong belief that spaying and neutering decreases our pet overpopulation, we have teamed up with local veterinarians and offer low cost spay and neuter vouchers.
Come to HALO and pick up your voucher. It is affordable and for every pet fixed, you are doing your part in saving hundreds of lives.

More about this rescue

HALO Rescue is a no kill rescue and adoption center. We are Indian River County's only no kill shelter and yearly intake over 2000 dogs and cats.
HALO accepts these animals regardless of age, medical condition, or behavioral reasons as space permits. Once an animal enters the shelter we provide all emotional, medical, and behavioral needs before placing that pet in a forever family. All of our animals leave spayed/neutered, vaccinated, HW or Leuk/Aids tested, and microchipped.
We are the first shelter to begin a community cat diversion program where we expect to reduce the number of cats being euthanized in our county shelter by a targeted 900 cats/kittens within the next year.
HALO is a network partner with Best Friends and we are always seeking innovative fresh ideas for getting pets out of shelters, into homes, and off the euthanasia lists.
We do not receive government funding but rely solely on donations, fundraisers and grants to continue our lifesaving work.
