My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Annika and her sister Ali Rose come to DREAM in a bit of a state, but that's never stopped us - and it won't stop them. Annika is well, she's rotund. She's a lot more oval than she should be... and well, let's just say it. She's morbidly obese. Doesn't mean we don't love her any less. We are just honest. And setting a big plan for her.

Her previous owner loved her, but fed her too much, and fed her the wrong things. As a result of that, that disease we all despise, IVDD came a knockin'. This is the third time, and this is the time that she's gotten the care she so desperately needed. Her owner tearfully signed her over to DREAM, we moved mountains to get her here, and she has had her IVDD surgery at our specialty vet. She's recovering and eating well (and by well, we mean the appropriate amount of nutrition-packed food.)

Annika is EXTREMELY sweet. She is a peach of a pooch with lush piebald coloring and part of her rehab will be losing a lot of those lbs, which will take pressure off of her spine and encourage her bounce back. We don't know yet if the surgery will be a complete success, but guess what..., so far so good. She's walking and peeing. And besides, IVDD dogs can live a long and gleeful life with wheelchairs and dragbags – so it's just a matter of allowing time to do its thing.

Stay tuned to see her transformation. This is one you'll want to keep your eye on.

If you are interested in adopting Annika, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application. Annika's adoption fee is $350. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Annika will go to her new home microchipped, altered, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations, and with all other medical needs addressed. Almost every dogs' veterinary expenses are greater than our adoption fees.

DREAM is an all-volunteer rescue group. We focus on the metro Atlanta area and can assist throughout the state of Georgia. Since our rescue is entirely run and staffed by volunteers, our ability to travel long distances for adoptions is somewhat limited. We focus on Georgia, but if you’re in a neighboring state, we might be able to work something out - we’ll expect you to do your part. DREAM does not recommend purebred dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a doxie's back.
