My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Underdog (formerly known as Diego) is an 8 month old American Bulldog who is being rescued from the shelter on 01/05/10. He is being released to us early (prior to his 5 day hold expiring) due to his medical condition. He is very emaciated and is suffering from an extreme case of demodectic mange...also called demodex. This is generally a condition experienced by young dogs under 1 1/2 years of age and is not considered to be contagious to other dogs, cats or people. Treatment does vary depending on the severity of the symptoms and the response to initial treatment. Underdog will be taken right to the animal hospital and will undergo a full exam and treatment as decided by the vet. We hope that he responds well to the medications and can be ready to go to a foster home before too long. We have seen cases of this clear up in such a short time, yet so many dogs are euthanized simply because they have this very treatable ailment.

We will have lots of new photos of Underdog and will post his progress regularly so be sure to check back!

UPDATE 01/06/10 There was a slight glitch in Underdog's rescue from the shelter. In the morning of 01/05 we got a phone call from one of the rescue coordinators at the shelter and he said they had just found a microchip on him! They phoned the listed owner and he told them that Underdog had run away about 4 months ago. He also said that he originally got him from the Humane Society and that he did NOT want him back. Our rescue plan was put on hold while an investigator followed through with the Humane Society in an attempt to verify his story AND to be sure that they did not want to take possession of him and that they approved his release to a rescue group. Just before the end of the day, word came through that we could come and pick him up and we did! He was taken straight to the animal hospital and will never spend a cold night in pain and in a shelter again. He is emaciated at 50 pounds and we can tell that this will be ONE BIG BOY when he is healed, and reaches his full potential. His personality is amazing and he loves people and other dogs. He did wag his tail like crazy and whine when he passed by the cats, so we think maybe he is not best suited to a house with cats in the future. His skin condition is much worse than we thought and upon close inspection we can see that he is raw and bleeding in several spots and we know he must be so uncomfortable and in pain. Due to the mange, his penis is also extended and remains that way at that moment. We will get some more photos of him today when we visit with him at the hospital and he has a thorough exam. The thinking from the vet right now is that he will need to receive the 'dip' treatment and he will need to stay there for at least some time. The initial estimate for his 30 day stay and treatment is $580.00 and this is at a very discounted rate THANK YOU DR. DARKO. If you are able to donate towards his care, please know that no amount is too small and is very, very much appreciated and trust us....he is an amazing dog and will lead a long and full life and he is worth it!!
