Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Mike von Miellen is a striking-looking, 2-year-old Shepherd mix. The first thing you notice about Mike is his unique look with that white blaze extended across his face. The second thing you notice about him is his sweet personality. This fellow wants to please and he wants you to know that there isn't a spot on his golden-blond body that cannot be petted. He knows his sit and gives paw and takes treats gently. He walks well on a leash. At the outset he may be so excited that he is bouncing with joy. Mike would love to have another dog (or two) in his forever home. At the rescue he is thrilled to be walking with other dogs and, even leashed, may ask if they want to play a bit. In play groups he is simply the happiest pup in the yard. Everything is just great: the opportunity to explore new territory, the presence of lots of new playmates, a pool to play in, and people to pet him all over. He is very friendly and social, but even social butterflies have their limits: Mike is not a fan of cats.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.

In order to adopt any dog from Westside German Shepherd Rescue, one must fill out an adoption application first. Upon receipt of your application, a Westside adoption counselor will contact you.We do aerial home checks and you may be asked to supply pictures as well as arranging for a home visit prior to adoption.
Adoption fees vary with each dog and typically range from $150 to $500. They are set, taking into account the dog's age, training level, temperament, if they’re newly arrived, medical condition(s) (if any) and other factors. Adoption fees are used not only to rescue and place the dog you are personally adopting, but to aid in the future rescue and rehabilitation of other deserving dogs. Adoption fees are necessary; without fees, our rescue efforts would quickly come to an end. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, and up-to-date vaccinations.
