Speedy and Raleigh are a pair of messy haired, Maltese - Poodle mixes (try keeping their hair brushed!) that came to Fuzzy Pawz when their dad passed away and the family could not keep them, even though they would have liked to. The dogs are a hoot!

Speedy is about 6 pounds and 9 years old and Raleigh is 9 pounds and 6 years old. They are very friendly dogs, and love, love, love to sit on your lap. Both are neutered, have all their shots, and are microchipped.

Raleigh is a smart dog. He knows the sit command, back (aka stay back), and comes when called. Both he and Speedy are learning what “off” means as well. He does love to be outside and to bark at the squirrels and any other invader to the back yard. He is very sweet, comfortable little dog, most happy around people.

Speedy, the older dog, is less interested in cooperating with any commands, although he does respond to “sit” and “back”. He might come when called, but not if he thinks he will be asked to do something he doesn’t want to. Speedy did bite his owner’s son when he tried to pet Speedy while he was eating, so should not be around young children who might not realize that is not allowed. This dog also barks when strangers come into the house. He barks and barks and barks. If you pick him up, he will stop. And if the stranger is someone who might come regularly, treats from that person work wonders! Mostly what Speedy wants is to sit on your lap or right next to you. He paws at your leg if you have it crossed and he cannot comfortably sit there!

Speedy and Raleigh like to ride in the car. They are fairly good on a leash, but we are not sure how experienced they are with longer walks as they belonged to an elderly person. The dogs are beggars, and have been fed people food snacks in the past. They will try to snag food if they can reach it.

The dogs are 99% house trained. The 1% accident rate happens when someone doesn’t notice that they need to go out. Speedy also has a tendency to want to come back in the house before he completes his business. That can be fixed by walking him until he does, and not just letting him out in the back yard. The foster home the dogs are in had an old and rather incontinent male dog recently, and the smells are not yet gone. Raleigh has marked a time or two at the same spots that dog peed.

The dogs have been crated during their lives with their former owner, and in their foster home to prevent accidents. They like to sleep in the same crate and will go into it either on their own or when directed to. They also like to sleep with their person if allowed. Around here, they sleep in the crates till early morning, and then after being let outside, are permitted to come to bed for the last bit of sleep time.

As noted, the dogs like to sleep together and will look for the other when that dog is not right there. Speedy will sometimes try to chase off other dogs in the home, but never does that to Raleigh. While, we are not sure they are truly a bonded pair, their foster would prefer they go to the same home. They are used to each other and like each other.

Speedy and Raleigh both had recent vet exams. Speedy had a dental, with four teeth extracted. They appear to be in good health.

These dogs will need regular grooming every 6-8 weeks. They might benefit too from a closer haircut than they currently have to keep the area around their eyes and mouth clean, and their fur less rumpled.
