My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name, as registered with the American Border Collie Association (ABCA) is Riley’s Mick, but you can call me Mick, or Mickey, or GOOD BOY!

I am a 15 month old, 50 pound, lean, athletic, snuggle-loving, ball fetching, gorgeous boy!
I am neutered, fully vaccinated, heartworm negative, and in great health!

I come from an excellent breed line of WORKING DOGS but because my first human was ill when I was a younger pup, I have not had a lot of socializing and am a little nervous around new people, places, and dogs. Because my genetics make me want to work (play!) but my social skills are underdeveloped, I am now a special kind of Border Collie! I need soft human interaction (and I LOVE people, after I’ve been properly and softly introduced), lots of exercise (play!), and lots of brainwork like trick training (play!).

I have excellent house manners, love to learn tricks like ringing a bell to go outside, know a lot of commands, sleep soundly in my crate if it’s in the same room as my human friends, (especially if I’ve had enough exercise during the day!), and love to relax on the sofa or in your lap. I have a very nice “off switch” and settle down when directed. I play with all sorts of toys but love playing fetch more than anything! I’ve had a bit of formal scentwork training and love to use my nose to find things. I’m still learning to meet new dogs politely and need more exposure and training before I’m ready to regularly meet stranger dogs.

My new home will have to work patiently and carefully with me. A soft touch and calm voice will be important because even a mild scolding scares me and I loose trust easily. Experience handling a skittish dog will be important if you want to love me forever. I don’t plan on staying “reactive” to new situations, but may always be a bit scared/nervous when unsure of a situation. My best home will be a calm place with a big yard (fetch!), people who want to build confidence, train me to do tricks at home and, once I’m less nervous, maybe agility, or scentwork, or other hobby/sports (I’d do very well, intellectually and physically, if I can get over being nervous in that environment).

I am not a good candidate for dog parks or children. I have not been exposed to cats but have a strong herding instinct so there is a good chance I’d chase them. Once I know a dog, I play well with them. I am still a youngster so I think all toys, human attention (or anything the other dog is interested in) belongs to me. A dog buddy with patience, confidence, and tolerance for my juvenile antics would be a great friend! Someone who knows how to train me to run, jog, hike with them would be fun, too. I love exercise! Because I am a little nervous, living in a building with close neighbors, random noises, etc., like an apartment or condo with shared walls, and no private yard, would not be a good fit.
