Here's what the humans have to say about me:
ROXIE (FLORIDA)
Meet Roxie, the sweetest 3.5 year old, 8lb. Yorkie mix being fostered in Vero Beach, FL.
Roxie is ready for adoption. Roxie has been at her foster home now for almost two months. She continues to be the sweetest little girl ever. If you are looking for a lap dog, Roxie is your girl! She still keeps an eye on her foster Mom, but doesn't need to follow her everywhere, all the time. She is doing great in the house training department. She will still need some positive reinforcement as she has an occasional accident, but also uses a pee wee pad if she cannot go out. I think once she got used to being on the grass, she started getting the hang of going outside to potty. In the past, I don't think grass was an option for her. We believe that she was left in a crate for hours, where she had no other choice than to go right where she was.
Roxie is a good eater! She likes her joint mobility food as well as certain treats for joint health. She likes plain yogurt w/probiotics, especially frozen with papaya for a midday snack! Although Roxie gets along with small dogs and cats (she ignores them) she would prefer to be an only dog! She is afraid of big dogs so having a big dog in the house is not an option. Roxie likes all people, even small children, but she is a little fragile so a home with children over the age of 14 is a must.
It's been a busy few weeks for Roxie! When she first came to UYR we discovered that she had a limp. Her main vet took an x-ray as part of her doggie wellness exam. The x-ray showed some arthritis in her front left elbow. We then took her to a rehab vet where she was evaluated, and given a plan that included joint mobility food as well as joint supplements in the form of treats! Adequan Canine (glucosamine) injections were suggested as well. Her rehab vet, Dr. Amber also found a low-grade luxating patella. Unfortunately, her front leg with arthritis is also twisted, her foot points out to the side instead of in front of her. Dr. Amber gave Roxie some Laser Treatments and they seemed to help her. Roxie was also referred to an orthopedic vet to see if anything could be done to correct it. We had to wait over a month to get an appointment! Finally, she got to see the ortho vet on January 17th. Roxie had to fast (not her favorite thing) so she could be put under anesthesia to get better x-rays! It was determined that she has an angular limb deformity. Don't be fooled by this, she gets around great!
Roxie was then referred to a specialty vet that can perform the complex surgery that was thought to be needed. We were lucky enough to get into one of the top Orthopedic specialists in the State of Florida, within a week! His credentials include adjunct professor at both the University of Ohio and the University of Florida, as well as speaking engagements in various places around the world. But, that meant fasting again, and this time a long drive down to Hollywood Fl. Fortunately for her, she didn't need to have more x-rays so she didn't need more anesthesia! The specialists told us that her problem is an injury in her growth plate, how it happened, we will never know. This is also the site of arthritis. Surgery will not help. The arthritis will most likely get worse over time but how much and when is unknown.
So, the best things for Roxie are to stay slim and have low impact exercise. If she could find a home with a heated pool that would be great! Swimming would be the perfect exercise for her. At the least, a home with a fenced-in backyard is a must because she can only go for very short walks. Although she can run and jump on and off furniture it would be best to limit those types of activities. She has mastered going up the doggie steps but is still learning to trust herself to come down. A single-story home is a must for her also. Roxie has started getting sub-q Adequan injections. After the first four weeks, she will only need occasional injections, they can be given at home (it's easy, she doesn't react at all) or at any vet for a small fee. She has at least one year's supply that will go with her.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING before applying to adopt Roxie:
Roxie's ideal home would be:
1. Roxie needs to be an only pet!
2. No children under 14 years old in the home!
3. A home with a heated pool would be perfect for her exercising.
4. A fenced-in backyard is a MUST!
5. Single-Story only home!
If you feel that you have the perfect home for her and would love to give her the life she deserves as well as get all the love that she has to give, please fill out an application. If you have any questions please contact her foster Mom at yorkiesrj2006@gmail.com
