My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Good things come in small packages! This fluffy little package is Diva. She is a 3-year-old, 8 lb. Yorkie or Silky Terrier mix.

Diva and her sister Dixie were victims of extreme neglect – locked together in a very small cage for the majority of their short lives. Both tested positive for heartworm. The treatment is long and very painful, but both girls are true warriors and came through the treatment with flying colors. Due to this positive status, Diva will be required to stay on a heartworm preventative for the rest of her life. The cost for this preventative medication is approximately $6/month.

After living through that shared trauma, we originally thought these two girls needed to stay together. Dixie often acted as a bodyguard, the one who would protect Diva from the paparazzi when she was exiting some fancy nightclub. And Diva would guide Dixie in new situations, like making sure she used the right fork at dinner & didn’t embarrass herself in front of their rich friends. Once separated, they began to fill in the gaps in their own individual personalities. Diva is small, but she now holds her ground and is speaking up for herself. She isn't allowing herself to be lost in the crowd. And Dixie is learning that she should trust her own instincts, make her own choices, and everything will still turn out alright. She is a whole lot smarter than she gave herself credit for. We all reach a point in life where you have to stand on your own two feet (well, your own four feet in this case!) - and that time is now for these gorgeous girls.

Diva is very affectionate. She loves to be held and cuddled. She will wrap herself around your neck while you are binge-watching TV or streaming a movie. She will curl into the tiniest ball in your lap and greet you with sloppy kisses every single morning.

Diva is working on her housebreaking. She does go outside to potty and uses potty pads indoors because her foster mom works. She still has accidents sometimes – given that the first few years of her life were spent in a cage where she was forced to potty where she stood, it is taking her a little bit longer to put the potty training pieces together. She has come leaps & bounds since arriving in Western New York. Please be patient with her if she has an accident – she wants so badly to please her people and is truly trying very hard. She is still playing catch-up with some life skills at this point. This is also true to her breed – in general, it takes Yorkies a little longer to commit to going potty outside. Diva wants to be a success and make her family proud, she just needs a family that will give her the opportunity to learn and grow into the amazing dog she is destined to be.

Diva will bark if she hears something – like any good watchdog. She may continue to bark, however, even when it is obvious you heard her the first time. She is protecting her people! She is protecting her home! Everyone needs to be aware of the danger of that mailman or that leaf that just landed on the driveway! Due to her dedication to being such an expert barker, Diva is not suited for apartment living.

Diva will require a fenced-in yard (NO invisible fences). She is not leash trained – she is still anxious and fearful when the leash and harness come into view. She is smart as a whip and there is no doubt that in the future, with a patient owner, she can be taught. But for now, she needs a secure outdoor environment so she feels safe. Invisible fences will not be considered.

Diva is a delicate, pretty, girlie-girl. She loves a good bath with a vigorous booty scrub. She loves a blowout, and having her nails done. She is a dream at the doggie salon! She will require routine grooming to maintain her beautiful self, so please be aware of this additional cost if you are considering adopting this tiny princess.

Diva has not been tested with cats. She can be tentative with new people, some general barking and pacing at the beginning. She will defrost quickly, and then your guests will be drowning in Yorkie love!

Diva came from harsh beginnings, but you would never know it to look at her. Love, love love – that is what Diva is made of. She is ready to share it with a forever family.

Diva is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated. Her adoption fee is $450
