Here's what the humans have to say about me:
North New Jersey
UNFORTUNATELY, WE CANNOT REPLY TO INQUIRIES SENT DIRECTLY THROUGH ADOPT-A-PET. PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW TO APPLY.
Bella is a beautiful 5 yo. 10 lb. female white and gold parti Shih Tzu. She arrived completely traumatized and couldn’t be handled. She also appears to have been debarked ☹.
Bella has made amazing progress while in our care and has warmed up significantly. She now loves being with her person and loves tummy rubs. HOWEVER, she still needs time and patience to learn that not all humans are going to hurt her. Care must be given when handling her to watch for her signals that she is scared and needs a minute to get her bearing.
She is terrified of “being cornered” so we can only imagine what happened to her ☹. She has bite history in her former home and breaks skin when she bites. She was particularly scared of the children in the home. She can use a crate and seems to feel safe in it but human interaction should consist of putting her in and taking her out. She should not be poked etc., while she is in the crate. She does well having free roam in the home and has never had an accident.
Bella is scared of being outside and will stick like glue to her human. She will walk on the leash but she does not take her eyes off of you. She does seem to know how to potty outside but clearly she was never socialized out in public. In her new home she should be introduced to the outside in short spurts to eventually build up her confidence.
Bella has been living with several other small breed pups in her foster home. At first she was nervous around them and didn’t know how to interact with them. But she has warmed up and doing well with everyone. She doesn’t seem to know how to play with other pups yet but is starting to play with toys by herself.
Surprisingly, Bella is very good for her baths, blow outs, and loves to be brushed. She is also a good eater and housebroken for potty pads (she never misses) and she will potty outside if taken out (but note above that she is terrified of being outside and will need time to learn outside is ok).
Given Bella’s bite history and fear level, she requires a quiet home with NO CHILDREN LIVING OR VISITING. She would do extremely well with one (or two) humans that are homebodies and have minimal visitors. She needs to be interacted with in a calm and easy-going manner and have a consistent environment.
Bella has chronic dry eye and requires Tacrolimus eye drops daily for life. She is UTD, spayed, HW negative, dental, debarked, and housebroken for potty pads and outside.
