Ritz is a stunning, neutered, 1.5-year old male blond/black German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix. He has one blue eye and one brown eye. In June, he arrived at the county shelter, fearful of everything – people, dogs, noise, and play yards. With time and the many hours volunteers and staff have spent gently encouraging him, teaching him to trust and build his confidence, Ritz sometimes struts around the grounds at the shelter so confident that it appears he owns the place! He loves running in the shelter play yards with dog toys, and he can't resist chasing tennis balls. After an energetic playtime, he will come to his favorite person for some petting. He is comfortable with being petted all over - head, chest, belly, paws, and legs.

Ritz has met and done well with several dogs his size. Due to his lack of confidence, he should be introduced to other dogs slowly as he can be easily overwhelmed. He was calm and gentle with all the dogs, but he especially liked meeting a Shepherd mix named Myles, and immediately began doing play bows!

Ritz has his moments of fear- new people or places can temporarily set him back, but patience, kind words of praise, and some treats help push him forward. He would most likely do best in a calm home without young children, with a regular schedule and minimal foot traffic. Another well-matched dog playmate would help him learn how to be a dog in a loving home.

This handsome boy walks well on a leash when he is with someone he knows and trusts, but he can pull when he is nervous about going somewhere new. He is looking for a foster or adopter who will let him adjust at his own pace and give him a routine he can get used to. He is always quite happy to return to his kennel at the shelter, so having a crate in his home should give him a safe and cozy den to retreat to whenever he needs a break.

Ritz is at the San Diego County Animal Shelter at 2481 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad, CA. Please call the shelter at 619-767-2675 for information on opening hours and meet and greet appointments for Ritz.
