I always think about adding the GSP prefix when I add a Liver and White Field Bred Pointer because while these dogs do look similar and may have similar behaviors, they are not the same breed. Starbuck is definitely going to bring a lot of joy and laughs to the family that adopts, but any potential adopter needs to do their research. GSP's are closer working dogs that can also be watch dogs and most aren't good with cats. Pointers are bigger running dogs in the field and can't be let off leash and absolutely need a SAFE FENCED IN YARD- no exceptions. No Invisible fences either. Starbuck is PET QUALITY only-- no hunting homes. Serious inquiries in the Chicago area only.
8-21-2022: Starbuck has been waiting several months to find the perfect forever home. I have turned down many potential homes because #1 he needs a home in the Chicago area, #2 he needs a traditional fenced in yard, #3 he needs dog buddies, #4 he needs to sleep in bed, #5 he is not a city dog, #6 he would benefit greatly from someone familiar with field bred Pointers.
It took several months but Starbuck has filled out beautifully. He is now a solid 70lbs. It would be great if we could find him a working dog Agility home or a home with a runner. Paws crossed we find him the perfect home soon.
04-20-2022: Starby is doing amazing!! He has finally filled out and he has tons of energy. He got to run at hte local fenced in dog park and in true field bred Pointer fashion-- he ran big!! He did come when called which was nice. He's just the best dog-- great with other dogs and cats, super friendly and cuddily. He has turned into a first class couch potato and he also sleeps in bed with his foster mom and his foster brothers. His ideal home will be in the Chicago area with a family familiar with the bigger running Pointers. He would be a great running partner and he would love a romp at the local dog park maybe at least once a week.
01-25-2022: Vet appointment went well- Starbuck was such a good boy and LOVED everybody he met. Given how thin he is, his bloodwork looks decent and his fecal was negative. He was surely not fed enough with his past owners and surely not quality food (Purina) and we are working on helping him catch up with more meals and better food. He would probably look best at about 65lbs.
01-26-2022: Starbuck is going to be drop dead gorgeous when he fills out. He is tall and weighs in at 57lbs with his ribs and hip bones showing. He is still being fed 3 times a day and is being wormed and getting some antibiotics for suspected underlying tick borne disease. He is 100% American Field bred Pointer (as I have his FDSB papers) and he is showing lots of Pointer personality and is starting to live his puppy hood as he loves to play with toys, and he loves to carry around a Lacrosse ball he found in the yard.

Having lived out in a kennel with only a blue barrel filled with straw for shelter, he is adjusting well to indoor living and is starting to lay on the couch, but he hasn't figured out dog beds just yet. He also will need work on counter cruising. I have my heart set on him moving to an Agility home as he is very FOOD and TOY motivated and that is what you need to be successful in agility training. The Pointer that started this rescue was my sweet Westleigh-- also a FDSB rescue and he was 63lbs and a blast to train in Agility. Starbuck has tons of potential with this sport.
I am only looking for a pet home-- NO HUNTING HOMES. He is not a GSP- but anyone that has had a GSP would like him a lot. But again-- he is not a GSP and while he may look similar, he is bred to be an independent big running dog where the handlers follow these dogs from 1 to 3 hours off of horseback.
Starbuck is a 2 1/2 year old Liver and White American Field bred Pointer (not a GSP) that survived a terrible tornado destroying the kennel he was housed in. His breeder felt Buck would be better suited as a pet rather than a field trial dog. Buck has had some field training but we are currently looking for a pet home for him. He is dog, cat and kid friendly but has never been in a home but is adjusting well to indoor living although the TV has him a bit confused.
We also need to do our obligatory blood work to see where his health is at and then he will also need to be neutered. He is adjusting well to indoor living although the TV has him a bit confused. He LOVES being loved on and has the sweet Pointer personality that is so wonderful in the breed. We are looking for a patient and kind foster or foster to adopt home in the Chicago area that has a safe fenced in yard and Pointer experience preferred.
