Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Sookie came to us on October 18, 2021. Here is her story: Hi everyone! Welcome to my page. My name is Sookie. On October 18th, 2021 Kern County Animal Services found me wandering through the streets of Bakersfield with a severe prolapsed rectum and bilateral cherry eyes. The kind officers rushed me to the ER for emergency surgery. Apparently my prolapse was about 4-5" long and becoming necrotic but the surgeon was able to fix me up. That was super scary but then I got to go home with a very sweet lady named Sally. Her house was calm and cozy and made me feel safe. The people that bred me never gave me any shots so unfortunately I came down with Parvo and Miss Sally's house. This made me feel really icky and was scary since I just had rectal surgery but Miss Sally nursed me back to health. She called her friends at Strength of Shadow Dog Rescue and asked if I could go live with them and hopefully get my eyes fixed and get spayed so I don't contribute to the overpopulation problem in Kern County.
On November 3rd Miss Shawnra picked me up from KCAS and I got to spend a couple days with her until everyone got their ducks in a row. Her house was fun. I've never seen so many animals and kids in my life (all 7 months of it). A few days later Miss Kathy came and picked me up and took me to her house. When I arrived I already had my own bed and toys to play with. This being rescued stuff is pretty cool.
On November 15th, Mr Robbie and Miss Jen picked me up and took me to Dr Thurman for a checkup. He looked at my bottom and said everything was "looking good down there". He told his assistant to schedule my eye surgery and my spay and to draw up my vaccinations but then he listened to my heart... He discovered that I have a Grade 4-5 heart murmur and possible PDA so he cancelled my surgeries and my shots and told Mr Robbie and Miss Jen to take me to the Cardiologist ASAP.
On November 18th, Mr Robbie and Miss Jen picked me up again and said we were going on a road trip to Thousand Oaks. Mr Robbie held me up so I could see all the cool stuff while we were driving. It was taking forever so I fell asleep but when I woke up we were there. Miss Jana came to say hi to me while I was waiting for the Dr. She was very nice and I liked snuggling with her. A sweet lady came to get me and said that the Dr Nakamura was ready and that I was going to have an echocardiogram. It sounded scary but it wasn't so bad. The Dr told me to wait with the nice lady while he went to talk to Mr Robbie and Miss Jen.
When I came back to the car they were both very sad so I gave them lots of kisses. I guess I don't have PDA but instead I have Pulmonic Stenosis (which is worse). It is a congenital narrowing in my heart. Normal pressure should be <25mm Hg and mine is 131 mm Hg. This means my heart works 5 times harder than it should. Typically they would do a balloon valvuloplasty to fix this but I guess I am extra special because Dr says I also have a R2A anomaly. This means that my coronary artery is wrapped around my pulmonic valve so if they did the balloon thingy the artery would burst and I would never wake up. The Dr told me I have to take beta blockers for the rest of my life and that I can never have surgery of any kind. He also told Mr Robbie and Miss Jen that I may never see my 2nd birthday. I don't understand what that means but I think it's why they were so sad.
The drive home seemed much shorter but Miss Jen said it's because I was snoring the whole way home. When I woke up Miss Kathy was there again and she took me back to her house where my bed and toys were still there waiting for me. She gives me my medicine and eye drops a couple times a day but they don't bother me and she started feeding me some new yummy food and I LOVE it. My friends at SOS Dog Rescue helped me start this page so that you can follow my journey with me. Thanks for all the love and support you all have sent me already. Love ~ Sookie
Sookie is actively looking for her forever home even though we have no way to tell how long forever may be. She does great with everyone and everything. She will come with about a years worth of meds and they are also very inexpensive if she defies all odds and lives a long life.
