Bagel strayed into a family's home in August. They searched for an owner, but when one wasn't found, they brought Bagel into their home and took care of him. He was skinny and flea infested. They fed him until he didn't look so malnourished and got rid of the fleas! The family decided to surrender him to ARF after he started snapping at their fingers when they pointed at him to tell him "no" as a correction. However, by their own account their household is always very busy and active. They thought it might be too stressful for little Bagel and he would do better in a calmer home. Though he was a stray so his exact age isn't known, he seems to be a bouncy, happy little guy about one year old. He is good with kids, other dogs, and cats. Bagel saw the vet on Nov. 18; he was a very popular patient! He weighed in at 14 pounds and met everyone at the clinic with a waggy tail (and no snapping at all). He did well with being handled and, although he didn't know quite what they were doing to him and screamed at the application of alcohol to his paw, he handled the blood draw and shots well. His 4DX test was negative and he received his rabies shot, DHPP shot, and bordatella. He even cooperated and gave a fecal sample just outside the entrance to the clinic (which was negative). Bagel came into foster care with ARF on 11/24 and quickly adjusted to his new environment. At first, he wore a belly band since his family said he had started marking in the house. He only wore the band a day or two, for he clearly signaled when he had to go outside.. Bagel was neutered on Nov. 29, and he has been given crate rest and minimal activity while healing. (His foster mom says he has a more urgent whine to go out if he has to do the "big job.") He's met the other dogs in the household and likes everyone. He loves to play, and will sit pretty for treats. He has not guarded either treats or toys. Not a single snap at either human or dog since he has come into ARF's care! Obviously, a regular routine so that he understands what is expected of him and paying attention to his signals have made all the difference for this little sweetie who loves to give kisses and sit on someone's lap!
