My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DECEMBER 2021: Stately big girl is quiet and companionable but not so much a lapdog; she prefers to snooze in a medium-size wire crate or a medium-size big nest bed— Although she’s been known to curl her self up small enough to fit into a small nestbed! Athena definitely prefers to be a floor dog, as opposed to one who likes to jump up onto furniture or people beds; Although Athena does fine in a multi dog household I think she would prefer to be an only dog as she doesn’t like others snoots in her food bowl. If you were interested in adding Athena to your household please go back to the wrenyorkierescue.org website to print & respond to questions on the Adoption Application, which we need to review before setting up an interview

Additional adoption info

Our adoption fee is $500/adult dog, $750/puppy (sometimes adjustable on an individual basis); payable in installments if necessary--checks for the full amount must be given before a dog can be placed with you.

Steps: 1. read the dog's "back story" carefully to determine which pet might be a good fit for your situation and expectations. 2. send an EMAIL to WrenYorkieRescue@aol.com & include your COMPLETE CONTACT INFO: Phone, address, City & Zipcode or visit www.wrenyorkierescue.org to print your forms; 3. Read carefully, complete and return all sections of the application; 3. Allow us time to contact the people you have listed as references who know you as a pet guardian. 4. We will call to clarify understanding of responses and give you the opportunity ask additional questions; 5. A visit to your home will be scheduled to meet you and all people who will potentially be involved in the dog's daily life at your location, and to observe the dog's reactions to those people and your space as well as dog/human interaction and "chemistry".

If all seems right, the full adoption fee will be collected and you will be given an Adoption Contract & asked to initial each numbered section to indicate having read & understood. Rescue will take back the dog at any time during the next 30 days if it is discovered not to be the right match, and all but $25 of your adoption fee will be returned. Rescue will also take back a dog after 30 days, but without a refund.

You must be able to meet the dog's medical, physical and emotional needs, and agree to return the dog to a Rescue- NOT a shelter-if at any time your circumstances alter and you are no longer able to care for the dog. This Rescue will come to collect the dog if you are unable to bring it yourself, and we MUST be notified if the dog changes owners or residence. Call or text 510-610-0291 or email wrenyorkierescue@aol.com

Adoption application

Go meet their pets

Once a completed Adoption Application form has been received & reviewed, specific dogs are interviewed BY APPOINTMENT ONLY at your home, an agreed-upon public space, or via FaceTime (if you have an iPhone). We generally don't do public adoption events, as Toy Breeds such as highly sensitive Yorkshire Terriers often are too intimidated by the noise and excitement of large crowds "to put their best paws forward".

We participated in the Maddie's Fund annual adoption events while that very special free-to-the-public Program ran between 2010-2015. Our adoptable dogs were interviewed by controlled numbers of people in the familiar backyard spaces of several Board members and volunteer foster families where the dogs felt safe and fully at ease. Wren Yorkie Rescue rehomed 59 qualified dogs during the final Program Event in 2015.

Maddie's Fund (www.maddiesfund.org) is a family foundation founded in 1994 by Workday co-founder Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl, who have endowed the Foundation with more than $300 million. Since then, they have awarded more than $153 million in grants toward increased community lifesaving, shelter medicine education, and pet adoptions across the U.S. The Duffields named Maddie's Fund after their Miniature Schnauzer Maddie, who always made them laugh and comforted them during stressful business times when Dave was launching a startup software company. Maddie was with Dave and Cheryl from 1987-1997 and continues to inspire them today.

More about this rescue

We are a NO-KILL small family rescue in Oakland, CA and an IRS- approved 501[c]3 non-profit Breed Specific Animal Rescue. EIN# 46-3585086. Ms Dondero has been a vet-tech and dog/cat groomer for many years, involved with animal rescue work for 4 decades, and has specialized in rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing Yorkshire Terriers since 1995.

Private Rescues are different from public facilities:
We consist of a network of UNPAID, animal-dedicated individuals and foster families who volunteer their own time and money to care for companion animals in their homes, treating them as cherished members of their own families until just the right permanent new adoptive home can be found among the applications received.

We have no building [and no cages, except as needed for medical recovery or special-diet "dining rooms", no staff, no public viewing hours--appointments only, and no predictable source of reliable or consistent revenue. We pay our dogcare medical and supply costs entirely from Adoption Fees set by our Board and DONATIONS. We greatly appreciate all donations and offers of assistance, particularly temporary foster homes!

If you are unable to foster or adopt, but would still like to help, we invite you to offer support at whatever level is comfortable. Email WrenYorkieRescue@aol.com to inquire how you might assist using your time and talent or make a donation via check, cash or PayPal. We prefer checks, as PayPal takes 2.2% of all donations it processes. 100% of all funds collected go toward dogcare expenses.

Funding is accomplished entirely through IRS-allowed personal finances, PRIVATE DONATIONS, and ADOPTION fees--averaging $400-$650, which frequently do NOT cover costs of getting a dog ready to be settled into a new permanent home.

Our average annual Rescue expenses are about $40,000, most of which is never recovered. Average best-case scenario out-of-pocket costs to get an incoming dog restored to health and placed in the right new home run around $400--lots more if there are special medical needs beyond spay/neuter and dental to be met.
