My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi....I am Freya...and so thankful that a nice lady took me from where I was...read more below & the updates. After six months of foster care after my initial arrival, I rechecked into the Pet Adoption Center on Sunday, 9 October 2022.

I know.... I am in my best kitty dream EVER.

I have been through a lot to make it here. Uncertain why I was surrendered to a very rural animal shelter at age 3...my past is a mystery...learning more about who I am day by day.....it seems though, I am a misunderstood feline. Read more below.

I am an Independent gal who likes attention and affection on my terms. It is just who I am after all these years.

I WILL come to you for attention though....just be ready when I do.

We can play with the fleece wand toy, the wand toys with bells on them, and the e-motion feather toy together. I like to hide out in the cardboard scratching cube too. I enjoy soft music - it calms me.

While I may not be a 'perfect' cat from the start, I need time to settle-in, just give me an extended amount of time to adjust to feel safe and to trust you...and you shall be rewarded. Help me to unwrap from all these layers of having my guard up. I really really want to have a home of my own.

I need to be your one and only cat in the family. Unsure of dogs...maybe a non-barking dog who will leave me alone? Little kids, with their noise and fast movements, really un-nerve and scare me.
I will either hiss at other cats as they pass by me .... or...I will lunge out at them to leave my space.

Because I may be temperamental every now and then, probably best if the children are older rather than the young wee ones in the house or no children at all. I use to play bite a lot, but after my three week of fostering, that behavior has subsided to love nibbles. I really can and do want to be part of a loving and warm home.

I started out on the second floor here at the Pet Adoption Center and would jump down. Before, all I did was to stay in my room / cage and sleep. I can be scruffed to get me back into my room - not too happy and not a fan of it, but all possible now.

So, I can change....I want to change...I want to learn how to be a cat...that is where you come in to assist me. I really need YOU!

My birthday is 20 August 2018 for your family calendar.

Background

I came from a NC rescue group two hours away and checked into the Pet Adoption Center on Monday, 6 December 2021. This rescue group rescued me from a rural NC shelter that has the highest euthanasia rate in NC. My time was nearing ....as no one expressed any interest in adopting me.

The day after my arrival, 7 December, I started sneezing with a discharge and my right eye was weepy. It was assumed it was related to traveling stress...I was observed...but it seems the symptoms may have been more than stress. On Wednesday, 8 December I was removed from the Pet Adoption Center and reported to sick call - subsequently being placed on MED HOLD for an URI. I finished treatment and returned on Tuesday, 14 December.

At the beginning of the new year, 1 January 2022, someone expressed an interest in fostering me - and to see if their other male cat would get along with me. They fostered me for three weeks (1 - 22 January 2022). It was not working out - their male cat became dominant (a surprise to them). When it was just the humans and me in our room together, I was a great cat - thriving for attention - especially the face and chin rubs - my favorites.

Updates:

2 February 2022:

Progress made! Today, I was out next to the cleaner and stayed by her side. She cleaned and I played with the feather e-motion toy. I did pop in to see some new cats - that may not have been a good idea. I walked in and began hissing and growling at them. What was I doing? I really scared the two boys. I was guided out and sent to my room for a time-out. I came out later...this time I stayed next to the cleaner. I even let her pet me. If you give me the time to calm down, I will stretch out on the floor and you can gently pet me. All good as I am the only cat out on the floor. Justsoyouknow, you can pet me while I am eating my wet food.

17 February 2022

It seems my chit was approved to move to a bottom room/cage. I now have the bottom junior suite. I can exit my room just by walking out. On the 17th and 18th I came out and sat under the small cat tree. I remained there while the cleaner cleaned - I looked out of window into the store - watching all. Then the boys - 6 month old kittens - who were playing, came up to me. We just stared at each other. No one hissed! This was a first for me! We took turns playing and chasing with the feather from the motion toy. Later in the day, I was the only cat out. It was quiet. The cleaner repositioned me on the floor and gave me a massage from the tip of my nose to the tip of my tail. She did this both days. I just stretched out and purred. After awhile, I let her know I had enough and went back into my room for a good afternoon nap.

11 April 2022

Freya here and I have Terrific news !!! I am checking out of the Pet Adoption Center on Monday 11 April 2022. I will be in a Foster arrangement for a few months. I already know I will have a bedroom of my very own - will have all my "stuff" with me and some new items - one of which is a cat tree. I am so excited. I met my Foster Mom, Dad, and their Son - this is going to be great. I already have approved of my Foster Mom as I rest my head in her hand!

I had my first ever Vet visit on 11 April too. I had a mani/pedi, gave blood and urine. I remain negative for FeLV/FIV! The results from Total Blood Function panel all came back WNL. My urine sample however, came back showing I have a UTI. I will get my meds and return for another urine sample 10 days later.

I can be held by my Foster Mum and Dad and meeting the other three cats without any issues.

2 July 2022

Freya here on 2 July 2022 and have I calmed down. I am wearing a collar with a bow, I wear a harness now too and I go for rides in the car. I visit many Pet Stores and everyone wants to pet me - I let them...I LOVE it - getting all of this attention - while I am pushed around in my pet stroller. I have my foster family so well trained.

I am very slowly and I mean slowly getting use to the other cats. There is one large fluffy one that keeps wanting to play with me... not sure what play is...but he rolls around in front of me and even while I am sitting on my cat tree. For now, I am okay by myself...just watching him as my personal entertainment.

I still go to the vets for my urine checks. I started on a special food diet to help me with my UTI.
