My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

A completed application is our first step toward any placement.  You will find the app on our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org.

Merlin is a very young and highly energetic full-sized Australian Shepherd.  He is what the breed should be.  No mini's.  No toys.  55# of glorious raw energy, just waiting for the right humans to help him become all the dog he can be.  No one needs to teach him about love.  He knows about love.  But he has missed out on the leash work (although with a Martingale collar and sturdy double-handled leash, he is doing better in 24 hours.)  And he does not realize how strong he is.  He was returned to a shelter because he was too much dog for the people.  Yup!  I get that.  Merlin was not born with training.  People seem to forget that they look to us humans as pack leaders to give them direction.  And Merlin has been failed by his humans.

You may ask why an Australian Shepherd is with a Collie and Sheltie Rescue.  Merlin was identified as a herding dog of unknown origin.  Border Collie-ish?  Maybe.  Collie or Sheltie-ish?  No.  Australian Shepherd, at least mostly?  Yes!  When you see the little nub of his tail wiggle with delight, you know who he is!

Dogs don't belong in shelters.  It breaks their spirits.  Municipal shelters provide a temporary refuge for lost or abandoned critters.  They have a very tough job to do and those of us who love dogs to the point of distraction should find ways to support our local shelters.  Money is always great but there are lots of other ways to help.  If your local shelter or rescue group welcome dog walkers (in spite of the pandemic), go and walk a pooch.  Your experience with the dog will enhance his skills and perhaps you know someone who would be just right for this particular dog.  Make a phone call and give a dog a second chance.  Fostering is an incredible experience but it is certainly not for everyone.  Make sure, if you are going to bring a dog or cat into your home, that there is a support network.

Oops!  I seem to have jumped up on my soapbox again!  Sorry.  Back to Merlin.  He needs a high and very secure fenced area for running around off leash.  Not that he would be happy confined to a backyard.  Merlin wants a BIG life.  And as he builds trust and knowledge with his family, he will want to go places and meet people.  Aussie experience is a must!  And a family that likes to laugh because Merlin seems to have a sense of humor.  It seems like a tall order but I know the right family will make a place for him.  Okay.....go!
