This very sweet, handsome boy is Mordecai (affectionately called Mordi by his foster parents). Mordecai is a big puppy at 60 pounds and only 10 months old. He is a typical Aussie puppy with all that this implies. His energy level, temperament and intelligence is typical Aussie.
This boy needs a home that has Aussie experience that will keep him mentally and physically exercised. He needs a strong leader to help him reach his incredible potential. Mordecai has a beautiful puppy spirit and would be perfect with a family with dog savvy children 12+ years old. He doesn’t understand just how big he is, so small children would not be a good fit for him.
Mordecai is not a couch potato or lap dog. This boy loves to work and gets bored if not given an outlet for his energy. He likes to work, play, and be involved. He is a true velcro dog and wants to be with his human whenever possible. Some of his favorite activities include sitting at the park and watching the world go by, daily outings like walks and car rides, and watching animal shows with his humans (He LOVES to watch animal shows!), and don’t forget his zoomies. When he gets bored, he will find ways to entertain himself, possibly to the irritation of his humans.
Mordecai would be a great candidate for agility training as he is highly trainable, loves to jump and run, and is very food motivated. He knows basic commands such as sit, up, down, go to your crate and leave it. He enjoys squeaky toys and bones. He takes treats politely but still puppy bites when playing. He is easily corrected and loves to please his human. He knows the command “love easy”.
Mordecai loves other dogs to run and play with. He respects other dogs’ food bowls and toys. He wants to play with all animals, even cats, but he is not harmful to them. He is being fostered with 2 cats, 2 rabbits and a female dog and has regular play dates with a male dog as well. He gets along wonderfully with both.
This boy sleeps well in his crate overnight but doesn’t like to be crated for long periods of time during the day. He knows the command for crating, but still needs to work on being respectful of the house and needs to be crated when left alone.
Mordecai gets easily distracted on walks and needs continued work on leash training. He is EXTREMELY strong so this needs to be taken into consideration when he is on walks. He rides nicely in the car, either in a crate or with others.
He loves new people, but still likes to greet people with his whole body. He needs continued work on off/down commands.
Mordecai’s furever family needs to utilize positive reinforcement training techniques only (he would not respond well to aversive tools or techniques.) A basic puppy class would be helpful to reinforce and strengthen the bonding process. He is very intelligent and picks up tasks quickly
Mordecai NEEDS:
A strong, experienced owner that will continue his training with positive reinforcement.
An active family that will give him plenty of physical and mental challenges every day.
A family that will be able to spend lots of time with him throughout the day.
Mordecai WANTS:
Another dog to play with and show him how to be a good boy.
A fenced yard where he can run off his excess energy.
Lots of love, and attention, and scratches.
Mordecai is UTD on all vaccines, neutered and on HW/flea prevention. He is housebroken and cat tested. He would be ok with a dog savvy cat (although he loves to chase and play with them.)
