This is Meri now - about six weeks into her new and much, much happier life. She still has a
way to go in her recovery, but already she's made huge progress. Her fur is growing back in
and her sores are healing well. Although she may not look that pretty (yet) on the outside, Meri is sweet, submissive, loving girl with a wonderful disposition and - amazingly - a happy, playful nature. She wags her tail and bounds and leaps around the yard. She pounces on balls and slings chew-toys around with glee. We estimate that Meri is between one and two years old, but she behaves like a total puppy - who can blame her? She's been reborn. All she needs now is a little more time and some love and cuddles and lots of medical attention. She's had expensive dips at the vet every two weeks since we've had her, with more to come. Donations to help with her medical bills gratefully accepted!!! Meri was close to dying when we rescued her from the shelter. Below is an account from her foster mom and a couple of pictures of her first day in rescue:
"Oh no.....wretched......huddled on the concrete floor was a bloody, putrid smelling bundle of
patchy, dingy white fur that had once been a beautiful pure bred white german shepherd.
Her eyes looked like pools of blood - but then she opened her eye-lids. She'd been sleeping
- the red I saw was the inside of her eye sockets - the skin had sagged that far away from her eyes. What little bit of crusty skin that was left on her muzzle, flapped back and forth when she moved her head, and when she shook her head, I felt something wet hit my check. Was it was the pus oozing from the sores in her skin? Or maybe a bit of the mucus in her infected eyes? I didn't know....I didn't really want to know. It was a tight squeeze there in the pen as I tried to take it all in. She had sores all over her body - crusty, tender, and bleeding in places were the last layer of skin was cracked. Her paws were swollen and her lack of fur made her emaciated state that much more prominent. This is the worst thing I've ever seen - you see this on TV animal rescue programs - but in person........the smell....the stench of rotting, infected skins was over-whelming. “Aw, poor baby – you’re a real mess.” ...and in response she struggled to her feet and feebly wagged her tail."
