Here's what the humans have to say about me:
The SOS call came from the shelter several weeks ago … could we please take Jeffrey, a handsome and energetic 4 y/o Pekingese who they considered “unadoptable” due to unpredictable behavior? Of course we said yes; how could we say no to this face?
They told us this adorable and endearing boy was mostly loving and sweet, but he had his moments. And they were right. He's a wonderful, happy, playful, affectionate boy - but he can be pushy, throw a tantrum, or possibly even try to nip if he doesn't get his way (though this is not common). After learning a bit more about his history, we felt we understood why. We believe that in his previous home he’d been the only dog and probably had no structure or boundaries … he never learned manners and simply wanted to be the boss … and he pretty much got his wish. And it became too much for his elderly owner to handle.
To rule out pain as the cause of his unpredictable behaviors, Jeffery had a thorough evaluation by our neurologist and even had an MRI. He has no significant pain issues beyond what is typical for his age and breed. He's actually a very healthy boy!
After spending the last few weeks with one of our very best fosters, Jeffrey is doing amazingly well! He is learning manners ... and that tantrums accomplish nothing. He has foster siblings of all shapes and sizes with whom he gets along well; he especially loves to play with other dogs about his size. He loves soft toys, running around the yard, and sunbathing. He enjoys long walks and does well on a leash, but definitely needs further work on his manners when meeting other dogs along the way.
Jeffrey’s foster mom says, “He’s one of the sweetest bossiest little guys! His feelings get hurt if he thinks he’s done something wrong.” He really does want to please, and he doesn’t like to be separated from his people.¬¬ He does okay in a kennel but isn’t particularly fond of being in a closed room by himself; he prefers to hang out with his people and is quite the snuggler. However, he does travel well in a roomy crate during car rides, and usually falls right to sleep.
Jeffrey is ready to find his new forever home with someone kind and patient, but firm, as he likes to test his boundaries. Once he realizes what he is and isn’t allowed to do, he does very well at listening. He needs a confident leader who is committed to continuing his education and training in the fine art of being a good boy! He will need someone to teach him that brushing feels wonderful and makes him even more handsome than he already is, and that the belly rubs he loves so much will be part of the deal as a reward for his cooperation.
He will need a home without small children, and one where he is not left alone for more than a few hours each day. He is a potential flight risk, so a securely fenced yard is a must, and he must never be left outside unsupervised. Because he is a brachycephalic breed, he must never be allowed to overheat in warm temperatures, nor walked long distances, or left outside for more than a few minutes in the heat of summer. He’ll need someone who understands the breed and can provide structure as well as plenty of opportunities for long walks and playtime. If there is another dog in the home, a meet & greet and a trial adoption period will be a must to ensure they can be the best of friends.
We would prefer that Jeffrey stay in Colorado so that we can help support his behavior training as he becomes the goodest boy he can be! However, an out-of-state adoption is not out of the question for the right home. And we know the right home is out there for this goofy little charmer who mesmerizes everyone he meets. They will be rewarded with an amazing companion who will bring joy and smiles to each and every day!
*Jeffrey is an active boy who loves to go for walks, play with toys, and socialize at the dog park. He absolutely must be in a home where he'll get to do all those things.
