My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

The Mighty Mijo is the lovable best friend you have been waiting for. He is all the things that make you want a dog. Mijo is loving, sweet, loyal, fun, playful, adventurous and oh so cute!! Once you meet the Mighty Mijo, you will understand how people can fall so deeply attached to their furry friends. He is a snuggly love bug, searching for his forever family. He makes human friends very easily and will have you wondering how you ever lived without him.

This adorable little guy came into the shelter severely injured, with some major battle wounds across his neck . He needed a safe place to heal. Sadly, sweet Mijo sat in a kennel for over a year without even an outing. One of the shelter volunteers decided to give him a day of pampering and they struck up a major bond and friendship. A dog who was once quite fearful, gained confidence and allowed his playful personality to shine through. It was not long before Mijo went from just visiting quiet parks and taking car rides for burgers, to frequenting all of the trendy coffee shops and brunch spots all around Austin. Mijo truly is so much fun to go exploring with around the city!

After a year and a half of sitting in a kennel, Mighty Mijo was fortunate enough to be chosen by two college students wanting to foster a long stay shelter dog. Mijo quickly adapted to all of the happiness and energy of being with the girls. He was basking in the subtleties of being in a warm, cozy home. He finally felt safe and could decompress in a peaceful setting. Those tired shelter eyes eventually disappeared. We know that his foster home is only temporary, but Mijo has transitioned into a mellow dog, ready for his forever family.

The perfect home for Mighty Mijo would include loving, kind humans who would adore this very good boy. While he is a major cuddle bug, he is also a guy who loves to go on long walks. He can keep up the pace and enjoys exploring. Mijo would love a family that will always look out for him, can provide stability, provide peacefulness and let him be his silly, playful self.

Initially, Mijo should be the only pet in the home. He had a very tough start to his young life and deserves all the love in the world. He did well practicing fence line friends with a few different dogs. But with time and decompression, he may do well with a compatible fur sibling. For now, Mijo would like to be your one true love.

Mighty Mijo is living proof that you can beat t

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
