Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Topaz is a blue-eyed and brown-eyed beauty. She has excellent collie conformation and her coat is the color of the gemstone for which she is named. It is probably because of her good looks, that Topaz’s life, prior to coming to MWCR, was that of a puppy producer. She came to us from a breeder who had used her to produce 9 or 10 litters of puppies, and her only interaction with other dogs had been for breeding. For this reason, Topaz is now learning what it means to be part of a family and to interact with other dogs in a happy, positive manner.
Topaz was not housetrained when she arrived at her foster home, but she is quickly learning the ropes and has had no accidents. Her foster family keeps her crated at night and when they are not a home, and she willingly goes into her crate when asked or when she needs some “alone” time. She walks very nicely on a leash and is a perfect lady when riding in the car. She has shown no herding behaviors such as trying to chase cars, bikes, etc. and is a very quiet girl who rarely barks.
Topaz is thrilled and amazed at all the new things that she is experiencing. She has shown no fear of household items such as vacuums, hair dryers, etc. and she seems to prefer to be inside, with her people, as much as possible. She will play outdoors with the other dogs for no more than 10 minutes or so, and then wants to rejoin the humans inside. When people are outside with her, Topaz stays close to them, so a fenced yard may not be needed for her, depending upon the location of her forever home
According to the breeder who surrendered her, Topaz is not good with young children and since her foster home does not have little ones, we have not been able to either confirm or disprove this. She has been great with the twelve year old boy at her foster home and seeks him out for praise and attention. She has also not been exposed to cats, so they too are an unknown quantity.
Topaz’s previous experience with other dogs was exclusively that of a breeder. When she arrived at her foster home, she was very defensive and fearful of the resident dogs, and would growl and lash out at them. With time, she has learned that they just want to play with her and that they are not going to hurt her, but she is still somewhat apprehensive. For this reason, she will need a forever home that either does not include other dogs or one that is willing to work with her during the acclimation process. She will need to be gradually introduced to other dogs and carefully supervised until she feels completely safe and comfortable.
Topaz is a loving girl who absolutely craves human attention. She watches her foster family and clearly wants to be part of everything they do. She will often sit in front of her foster mom and offer her paw as an invitation for attention. When she is being petted, she leans into her person as though she simply can’t get enough of them.
This amazing little girl is looking for a forever home that will show her that there is much more to life than producing puppies. She will need some time to adjust to other dogs, but will instantly give her heart to her people and will do anything to please them. She is truly a gem who lives up to her name.
