My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

FOSTERED IN: Chicago, IL 60625
ESTIMATED DOB: 06/2019
COLOR/BREED: Tabby Shorthair
KIDS: Yes
DOGS: Some
CATS: Yes

HISTORY:
Mateo was a stray who stumbled upon the right home, that of a fellow dog rescuer. She couldn’t stand to see him outside in the cold so she took the time to win his trust and bring him in. Upon examination at our vet they found a lump on his spleen. He had to have his entire spleen removed with the mass, which came back as a benign hematoma.

ABOUT:
Mateo is a super sweet, gentle, calm boy. His foster home calls him “love cat” because he is so affectionate. There are absolutely no off-limits zones to touch him, and he is particularly fond of belly rubs. He is happiest sitting on your lap or laying on your chest. He repays your attention with copious biscuits and quiet purrs. Mateo is a low energy guy who isn’t interested in playing, which also means he isn’t interested in “relocating” any of your personal possessions. He loves to nap in comfy spots, and look out windows. He will make an excellent quiet, calm, companion.

Mateo was housed in our adoption center for a while, and did great with the other cats and was gentle and passive. He has not been fostered with any children, but due to his gentle demeanor we think he would do just fine with older, calm children. Mateo is kept separately from the resident dogs, but he briefly met the calm chihuahua (whom Mateo outweighs). Mateo gave the dog a nose sniff, and then was more concerned about getting pets from the people than he was about the dog. We think he will become comfortable in homes with very calm cat-friendly dogs who will not be overwhelming. We expect that larger dogs will be more intimidating to him than the chihuahua was.

Mateo is a bit of a sensitive guy who can be overwhelmed with new things, but is not scared or skittish. He likes his life to be relatively calm and predictable. He keeps a safe distance from scary things like the vacuum cleaner, but can easily be lured back when you are done with the promise of scratches. Mateo is happy to meet visitors, as long as someone he knows is there to introduce him. Anyone who has attention to share is quickly a new best friend.

At the same time that Mateo’s spleen and hematoma were removed, we also had his intestines biopsied as he had some pretty regular diarrhea. He was diagnosed with IBD, it doesn’t cause him any distress and is well controlled on a special food. Mateo has always had perfect litter box habits. His prescription food is called Hills Gastrointestinal Biome that costs about $55 for an 8.5lb bag that lasts about 11 weeks. He also gets ¼ of a small can of wet food each day. This food is completely appropriate for any other cats in an adoptive home, but due to practicality all foods in his adoptive home would need to be transitioned to this food. Mateo is FIV+ What does all of this mean to you? Pretty much nothing. He needs to remain on his prescription food, and he needs to live a strictly indoor-cat life - like we expect of all of our adopted cats.

Mateo is a perfect boy who is very easy to keep happy. He makes few demands. He will never be bothered if you have long days at work, but will love to snuggle up next to you when you do finally make it home. Don’t pass up asking about this guy if you are hoping for a loving companion cat. Our adoption application can be found on our website: www.luluslockerrescue.org
